Exploring Arizona Day 1

Posted 10-30-2015 at 08:17 AM by Deelighted

Before I left Indiana, my research had showed me that I should look at areas in Cochise County but I also wanted to look at the areas near Cottonwood. However, I knew the prices in the Cottonwood areas would be a bit higher. I was looking for low income housing, but I was worried about there being a long waiting list. I had also found a few rental listings near Benson that weren't low income housing and fit into my budget.

I left my Patagonia State Park campsite, and took Hwy. 82 back through Patagonia and Sonita. Then I took Rte. 90 back into Benson where I had a late morning appointment to see a low income apartment and early afternoon appointment with a real estate agent. I stopped at Reb's Cafe and enjoyed a blueberry pancake breakfast. I had left a message that I would like to view a duplex in Pearce but hadn't heard back. Since my first appointment wasn't until 11 am, I decided I would head out to Pearce anyway just to see what the area was like.

I took I10 to Dragoon and headed on Hwy. 191 into Pearce. While I was driving, I heard back from the Pearce real estate agent so agreed to meet her in Pearce. The duplex was a 2 br with washer/dryer and rental was $550 mo but agent said price could be negotiated down. The dining area was in the kitchen and was not open to the living room area, the bedrooms were a decent size. The laundry area was inside the hall leading to the back yard which was small. The parking was in front of the duplex with a gravel drive that was quite overgrown with weeds. I told the agent that I was also looking at other areas and it would be awhile before I made any decision.

On my drive on Hwy. 191 back towards Dragoon, I had a huge bobcat cross the road in front of my car. IMO, Pearce was too rural for me and it would be necessary to travel back to Benson or to Sierra Vista to do any real shopping.

I took I10 from Dragoon back to Benson where I met with Denise at La Hambra Apartments on South Hwy. 80 in Benson. I was surprised to find out that a second floor 2 br low income apartment was available for immediate rental. The apartment was 883 sq. ft., and had washer/dryer hookups in a small area to the side of the kitchen. It was a very nice and very well kept apartment. I thought I would be back in a few days to rent it.

I headed back up Hwy. 80 into the heart of Benson and located DiPeso Realty where I met with Esther. Esther told me that with any of their rental properties I would be responsible for taking care of the outside yard.

Esther drove me to Mescal where I viewed a 1 br manufactured home with a $450 mo rental price. This home was very tiny and dark inside. I definitely wasn't thrilled with this property.

We then headed to St. David where I viewed a 2 br manufactured home for $450 mo. Esther called this a back door property. There was a mobile home right in front of it. While this was a bigger place, it was not well maintained and I did not like how close the other home was.

We next viewed a 2 br duplex inside Benson which was priced at $500 mo. This was a lovely duplex with ceramic tile floors throughout and came with a washer/dryer. There were 2 duplexes available, but the one with the fenced back yard had already been viewed and Esther thought it would be rented later that day. Esther's associate, Michelle, then took me to see a 1 br mobile home in Benson for $450 mo. This mobile was nicer that the first one, but I preferred the duplex.

I liked Benson but I would need to go into Tucson or Sierra Vista if I needed to shop anywhere besides Walmart and Safeway. I headed back to Patagonia Park for the night where I thought about the duplex and the low income apartment complex.
