Now that you've welcomed a pup into your home, it is important to provide your new pet with the right diet and meal regimen for healthy growth and development. Pure Balance, a holistic dog food available at Walmart, understands a pet owner's desire to feed their dog quality food and nutrients without unnecessary additives.
Young puppies should be fed at least three times a day until their food requirements – based on each pound of body weight – begin to level off as they mature. Feeding schedules can be reduced to twice a day when pups are four to five months old, and once a day when they are eight months old or older. Also, keep fresh water in a clean bowl nearby at all times so they stay hydrated.Choosing a puppy- specific formula food is recommended as it will be rich in nutrients and vitamins to ensure proper growth. The kibble will also be smaller and easier to chew for proper digestion.Your pup may not gravitate towards dry food right away, so try adding a little warm water or milk to moisten the kibble. However, be cautious not to add too much milk, as it can act as a laxative and cause digestive problems for some puppies (and even adult dogs). You should allow one hour for your pup to finish eating and then discard any uneaten portions to prevent any nibbling on spoiled food.
To establish a meal time routine, it is recommended that new owners begin feeding a puppy at the same time and place each day. Be aware too, that offering human foods from the table encourages begging and may create a finicky eater.
Further advice on choosing the right dog food and caring for your pup is available at your veterinarian.
