Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Another Wrong Fast-Food Order

It's that time again, folks. We've had Halloween. We've had an election. We're going to have Thanksgiving eventually (three weeks from this writing). But at this time, we're going to do some Scattershooting right here on Case's Column. Besides, that early Christmas shopping can wait a bit....

Just when you think fast food restaurants would have it together, when they understand your order, only for you to find out when the food is finally brought out to you, it's as if a brick wall took your order at the counter. My stars, this took place at Whataburger tonight in Coppell, Texas. Yes, I've written previously about restaurant flubs and mess-ups, but this is yet another such account. It was the manager of the place who took my order. There was that confidence that everything would be just fine. Moments later, the manager was leaving for the evening, and out the door she went, not bothering to make sure everything was right. So, then, some teenage employee came out with something a little different from what I'd ordered. Arrrrrgh! They must not have understood what I ordered, as something so simple ended up so complicated for the person bringing me my meal, not to mention those behind the scenes who put their pesky fingers all over the evidence. One of the most basic things on the menu, and she didn't understand it. Oh, everything was rectified in the ensuing minutes, and the correct order would be brought out.

If only that manager had stayed just a few more minutes....

In about one week, the Wakeland High School Wolverine Marching Band from Frisco, Texas, is going to embark upon a trip that will put them in the national spotlight with the most elite marching bands in America. They'll be heading for Indianapolis, Indiana, to compete at the BOA (Bands of America) Grand Nationals competition. This, I believe, will be their fifth contest this marching season, but it will be their biggest this year. The band will perform their nine-and-a-half minute contest show entitled "Venomous", which will include metal spiders for their visual props. Musical selections include works from Dmitri Shostakovich, Hans Zimmer, and John Corigliano. Wakeland is showing more and more why they are Frisco's premier program, but they sure have spent quite a bit on these trips (having already been to Austin earlier this fall for another BOA contest). Peculiar thing is, they usually do a spring trip each year during symphonic season. So far, such is not planned; at least, not yet.

It's getting cooler out there. Let's take the idea of dressing in layers to a whole other level, shall we?

Like many of you, I love Olive Garden food. And so does this guy whom you are about to meet. If only I could have a pass like the one he has.....

Election Day results are in, and America is slowly starting to show signs of making its way back to recovery. It was a magical, exciting evening of vast, positive change. Folks in many states voted for governors. Texas will continue under outstanding Republican leadership as Greg Abbott takes over the governor baton passed to him by the outgoing Rick Perry. In fact, our state's Proposition 1 to improve transportation passed overwhelmingly in Tuesday night's decision.

And in Washington, conservatives are now (finally) in control of both the House and the Senate. As they prep for a new year to come, they have before them a great opportunity to improve our nation's economy. They're getting to present this: GOP has votes to pass Keystone

And if this has ever been controversial in the eyes of some, it's been only for stupid reasons. We need this pipeline.

Just an idea, but I've pondered taking a sabbatical from the forum pages for just a little while. I'm a little burned out, and this writer just needs a little time to breathe for even the slightest bit. Rest is a good thing. A lot of knowledge --- and a lot of other things --- have been spewed out in my efforts to make the best post possible here on City-Data, where it's great to be alive. If I do decide to take a short absence from the forums, please rest assured that it won't come at the expense of these blog pages. I haven't written as much as I'd like, and I'm hungry for some new things to cover here. But then again, my ideas just hit me as I go through life, so there may not be a shortage of things to write about like I thought there were.

Don't panic. I'm not going anywhere yet.

You saw me alluding to Christmas earlier, and earlier happens to be the key word here. The commercial ads are already out on the tube. Sales are going up in many storefronts before we even get to carve our annual turkey. And the forecast is looking pretty decent, too.

Frisco's football frenzy is getting more dramatic going into the final week of the regular season. Centennial, Wakeland, and Heritage are all atop District 9-5A, all tied for first place.

In case you wondered about the burger situation, I had a valid voucher for a free Whataburger, but it'd only have been with a single patty. Their patties are thin, so I wanted to get an additional patty for one burger. What happened? The wait person came out with two single-patty burgers!

Tuesday's results were a breath of fresh air. Now the Republicans need to hold up their end of the bargain as they deal with Obama's last two years. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Sabbatical???? You better not, good friend. We need you!

I've been noticing the same thing about Christmas. Seems like it does get earlier each year.
