Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Baylor Football Destined For Greatness

Posted 11-26-2013 at 07:37 PM by case44

Boy, the Big 12 conference has changed a little bit, hasn't it? You expect, year in and year out, that Texas and Oklahoma would be the perennial top dogs in the conference. And, in the same breath, one would never imagine that Baylor would ever become a top dog, top-flight team in said conference, what with the likes of usual contenders Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State.

Better get used to it being crowded at the top.

As a Texas Longhorn fan, I shudder at the very thought of Baylor being a contending team in the Big 12, but that's what we have now. No more doormat at the foothold of the Brazos River. Art Briles has the second best job in America right now as head coach of the Baylor Bears, and he probably wouldn't want it any other way. Matter of fact, his recent contract extension is testament to how serious he is about improving things at a school no longer to be looked on as a doormat. Forget about the rumors of him replacing Mack Brown at Texas (which, right now, is the best job in America). Ain't gonna happen.

Art just isn't finished yet. His football team is just starting to make strides in the Big 12 and establish a new reputation with what has become an explosive offensive attack in the form of the spread offense. And the defense? Well, never mind that. People are paying big money to see the Bears' exciting offensive showing. They have a brand-spankin'-new, state-of-the-art (Sorry, no pun intended), on-campus stadium to move into this next fall. Their fan base is more excited than ever. Why derail all of that with Art Briles leaving Baylor for any other school, especially the one down the road in Austin? Art Briles can't walk away from Baylor. Not now. Not as long as his team is on the brink of year-in, year-out greatness, and he's simply out to prove that. That's why he came to Waco from Houston five years ago, not to just rent space at Floyd Casey and then bolt. Regardless of last weekend's meltdown versus Oklahoma State, the Bears seem poised to win once more, against Texas in a few short days at the old venue as same faces an appointment with a bulldozer after the upcoming move to the river.

It's a program you'll want to watch and be wary of in the years ahead. The Baylor Bears are about to be putting a perennial paw in the forefront of Big 12 football lore. Look how far Briles has had his team come to get to right now. He wants to be around when the Bears finally do the unthinkable, which is win a national NCAA championship, and it could be soon. When, not if.

Could be interesting.

Could be very interesting.

Oh come on, its one year. You have decades of winning ahead if you want to be considered a factor in college football. It's great for a perennial doormat, so enjoy it. Just don't get too used to it.

^^ Hey, now, I'm a Texas Longhorn fan first. I'm not trying to jump on the Baylor bandwagon. Adding another winning team is only good for the Big 12, not bad. It's just that there's another competitive team that I don't think will be a one-year wonder. Yes, they'll need more than just one year of the spread offense to get a reputation established.

If Art Briles stays there, that's going to be the key. They'll be good for as long as he's there.

Baylor and Texas will be after each other every year. If Texas gets back to elite status, then it should be a dogfight for first place in the Big 12.
