Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

JFK: The Remembrance After Fifty Years

It only took about fifty years for this day to arrive, but, unfortunately, it had to take a tragic event for it to be so. The very day it happened, I was not even born yet. My mother was working in a shop about two blocks from the Texas School Book Depository site where three shots rang out during what was supposed to be a celebrative event. A president was just taking a tour of my great state of Texas. He had been in Houston and San Antonio the day before, and Fort Worth and Dallas on the morning of November 22, 1963. President John F. Kennedy had been making the rounds in Downtown Dallas, waving to the folks who wanted to get a close-up glimpse of him before he would make his way to the Dallas Trade Mart to make an appearance there to help smooth out political relationships between three party members.

Instead, he and Texas Governor John Connally had to be rushed to nearby Parkland Hospital with gunshot wounds.

You know the rest of the story now. Today is a significant event in Dallas at Dealey Plaza, where a commemoration ceremony will take place, and security will be tighter than a drum. If you're going, well, you're too late. You have to have a pre-arranged ticket to get into the event. I had planned on going, but now, I can't even go. Flags will be a half-staff all day today for JFK. Let's take a moment and just pause............

.....and let's reflect on the life and legacy of the man who was much more than just the 35th president of these great United States.

Two links for you now: One, a song about JFK's life, and the other, a news clip from KUHT-TV (Channel 8) in Houston about Kennedy's next-to-last day in his life. All politics and persuasions completely aside, it's fascinating stuff.

Good post. I need to make it a point to go to the Sixth Floor Museum soon and check that out. Not today, of course, but maybe after I get back from Thanksgiving.

Couldn't go anywhere near Dealey Plaza yesterday, mal. As you know, we had some rain in the area and it was cold. My intention yesterday (the plan from a few days earlier) was to go to the West End (from where I would then walk to Dealey), as I hadn't been in a while, but because there was a big event at Dealey and I didn't have a ticket, that and the weather were factors in me just staying home. I'd have also had to navigate the freeways a little differently, as several exits at downtown were blocked off.
