The JoAnn's Gift Card

Posted 10-06-2013 at 04:18 PM by LookinForMayberry

The knitted hat pattern I am working requires a set of five double-pointed knitting needles for the bind-off, which (of course) I don't have. I searched online for where I could buy a set and found them at the JoAnn Craft Store in Lynnwood. Yesterday, I drove over there to buy a set.

I found the display, the size I needed, and walked them up to the line for checkout counter. I had a coupon for 20% off, and a gift card that Mom gave me for Christmas back in 2009. I think it was originally for $200 but I haven't used it in ages.

When it came time for me to check out, I placed the needles, the coupon, and the gift card on the counter and had my credit card ready. The checkout lady handed me the receipt, the needles, and the card, saying: "You have $7.88 left on your card."

As I took them from her, tears started welling up in my eyes and while I turned toward the door, stuffing the handful into my purse they ran down my face. I realized that that was the first time I'd used the card since Mom died (Nov '11), and more than likely there was only one more gift outstanding on it.

Walking out the store with my soggy handkerchief, noisily blowing my nose and wiping my face I felt like such a fool.

I think I will just keep that $7.88 in my purse and not spend it. Somehow, I don't think I could face having that next check out clerk telling me it was exhausted. No, I know it.

Thank you, Mom, for the knitting needles.

As I read this post, wipe my tears and blow my nose, I feel the squeezing pain of your heart. I lost my Dad August '08 and a day doesn't go by that I don't think of him.
People keep saying "it gets better with time" but that's bunk! It only takes something like a gift card to bring all the pain back to anew.....
    My thoughts are with you....
