Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Surveys, Surveys, And More Surveys

Posted 05-04-2013 at 08:51 AM by case44

Hi, everyone! Guess what I'm about to do again? We're going to gather again right here for more Scattershooting, direct to you from my keyboard to your eyes here on Case's Column. Going here, there, and everywhere as per the usual, so let's get it on.

Seems like every time I eat out or get something at a drug store, the receipts these people give me have these surveys where, if you participate and take them, you would be entered into some pool or drawing and win some money or some other prize. I have to admit, I'm tired of filling those things out online, redundant as they become. But if I have to give some effort to win a few extra bucks, then I suppose I have to bite the bullet every now and then.

Okay, so why not take advantage of such a thing? It's just a survey, and all I have to do is let them how they're doing. Most of the time, the scores are going to be good to superior, so filling the dots in shouldn't be so laborious. Um, wish me well on this. After all, the lottery commission still hasn't cooperated.

Austin radio deejay Tom Allen got around to playing my song this morning. The KOKE-FM jock was e-mailed recently with a request to play a specific song from Faron Young. He promised a week ago that "Step Aside", my all-time favorite Faron classic, would be played on the next broadcast at 8:15. Well, on that Saturday, 8:15 rolled around, and Faron Young was singing. It was......... "If You Ain't Lovin, You Ain't Livin' ". He got almost everything right. Now, to be fair, we had a lot of breaking country music news last week, what with Willie Nelson turning 80 and George Jones passing away at age 81. So, Tom did have a lot on his mind.

He would redeem himself this morning, and in the 8 o'clock hour, he played "Step Aside". It's okay, Tom. You're forgiven. I'll still be listening.

Still no word yet on two Texas highway stretches which await approval to convert to Interstate 69. The two stretches of road are U.S. Highway 59 inside the I-610 Loop in Houston, and U.S. Highway 77 from Brownsville to Raymondville. Both are still awaiting FHWA clearance, and it's a daunting process. It's even more grueling to wait.

By the way, Wikipedia's I-69 lookup includes an index of auxiliary highways in the highway's planned network. They already have these segments listed: I-369 from Texarkana to Tenaha, I-169 from Mission to Harlingen, I-69C from George West to McAllen, and I-69W from Victoria to Laredo, and that particular stretch is confirmed by many as the one that will carry the mainline I-69 route. Just one problem: AASHTO has not yet made the Mission or the Laredo segments official yet. The Texas Transportation Commission's I-69 website still has no information on any of the stuff listed.

Meanwhile, I-69 near Corpus Christi may end up being changed to I-69E just because we've got to differentiate the segments south and west of Victoria. I'll let you know something as soon as things get 100 percent official.

Ol' Case has some of his vacation plans lassoed and hog-tied. I've got the dates set for the latter part of July. Where I'm going has not been decided. Possible places are South Padre Island, Lubbock, Kansas City, or Carlsbad, New Mexico. Stay with Case's Column, and I'll fill you in upon my final decision.

And now it's time for our Word Of The Day. Today's word is shower. Now, that word takes up so many different usages in life. We can shower a bride with gifts when she gets married. God can shower me with blessings each and every day. In Texas, spring usually means showers (as in rain) and thunderstorms. And now, this writer needs to get in the shower, or he isn't going to smell real good!!

And there you are.

Surveys get so tiresome that I really don't bother with those things. I might every once in a while. Guess you can't pass up a thousand bucks.

Oh, by the way, the Wikipedia article has since been updated. There won't be any I-169 in South Texas. It will now be Interstate 2.
