Kate Is Thinking

The last few years I have been thinking about things. I’ve probably always thought, but I’ve become more aware of what exactly my brain comprehends. I might be out hiking by myself on a Saturday afternoon when I suddenly realize that my mind is busy mulling over something. Sometimes I will be pondering the world’s problems. Other times I find myself thinking philosophically. Sometimes my mind is concocting inane, silly concepts. I’ve considered carrying something to record some of my better, more insightful thoughts. But then I figured that if the thoughts were really worth keeping, I’d remember them. Besides, thinking cannot be unique to me. A lot of people think, right? Surely I’m not the only one.
A few weeks ago I drove from Yuma, Arizona to Phoenix. It’s a pretty good drive that takes about all afternoon. I started out listening to the radio. Then I put in a couple of CDs. Finally I decided that I didn’t want to hear anything but the drone of the car’s engine. I didn’t want to be distracted from my thinking. And I didn’t even know what I was going to be thinking about. I had nothing on the agenda. I just wanted to be free to process thoughts.
Somewhere around the small town of Gila Bend I began wondering what happens to a person’s consciousness when the person dies. Does it die too or would such a thing have its own life and continue existing in some other form or dimension? I did not know, of course. Sometimes thoughts do not lead to conclusions. Along the route I wondered why the world’s flying animals never evolved to be the size of swimming animals. Why aren’t there seven hundred pound birds flying overhead? Then I wondered if there were such birds, would just one of their droppings be big enough by itself to cover a car windshield? Like I said, some of my thoughts are inane.
The last fifty miles of the trip I thought about this man who has recently caught my interest. He’s an older guy. Truth is, he’s a guy who is probably too much older. But he’s funny, gracious, and just plain sexy. He remained on my mind for nearly an hour as the countryside’s joshua trees and creosote bushes passed by the car. Sometimes the best thoughts are really just a matter of letting your imagination go, especially when the thoughts involve the opposite sex.

I like chatting with friends, I enjoy music, and I like a good movie, but sometimes nothing is as interesting, enlightening, and downright entertaining as a person’s own thoughts.
