The firing of coach Laviolette and the re-hiring of Paul Maurice:

(speaking in a bit of a somber mood) Hey everyone, well I did not think I would be doing another hockey blog for awhile, but I have to chime in my thoughts with the releiving of Peter Laviolette's coaching duties and the re-hiring of Paul Maurice.

First off I doubt he will ever read this, but coach Pete, I wanted to thank you for all you did for this franchise. There were indeed rough times last season and the year before but you did your job well and won us a Stanley Cup and put the Hurricanes on the hockey map. The fact that you won us a championship is making me sad to see you go, and I wish you the best of luck with your future. The night of June 19th, 2006 was one of the best nights of my life as I saw for a moment, the Carolina Hurricanes be the best NHL team at the time. And nothing can take that away from you, the players, the staff, and the fans.

Okay, moving on, I was a little surprised to see this happen. I did think it was time for a change, and even though I did not think Lavi deserved to go, I could feel it coming. I was really surprised that we went back to our old coach who coached the team from 1997-2003, which included 3 playoff appearences, and an Eastern Conference championship in 2002.

I really think Lavi deserved to stay and it were up to me, he would have unless different circumstances evolved. The man did a lot for this team to really come together and play as a team and not individuals during our 2005-06 championship team. Some of these including taking the team out to dinner, rock-climbing challenges, organizing family outings, and encouraging players to bring their dads on road trips,. It really seemed to come together as the team kept winning and winning.

Lavi also adapted to the new rule changes in the league, by playing a lot of high-powered offense. He also was a great encouragement builder as well. During his time with the team, the Hurricanes fell behind by 2 goals often, but came back to win numerous times.

Maurice is a defesnive-oriented coach and defense is something we need but after watching the Pittsburgh Penguins score 5 goals on 20 shots last night, I hate to say this, but we could be an easy opponet for the other 29 teams for a while.

I think the team is still a bit hung-over even 2 and half years after winning the Stanley cup. Out of the entire 2005-06 roster, only a few had even been to the Finals, yet alone win a Cup. We also have had to deal with numerous injuries, new players, trading some of our core players, and honestly, the team has been kinda half-assing their play since then. But like one hockey general manager said, "It is easier to fire the coach than fire 20 players".

To wrap this up, I mean I'm certainly willing to give Maurice another chance but it seems weird Jim Rutherford is giving him a chance again. But then again, this is the same guy who has made some mind-boggling moves, such as trading Martin gerber, but has also made some good moves, such as trading Jesse Boulrice for Doug Weight, and getting Mark Recchi when Erik Cole was injured.

But honestly guys, I don't like the move, I hate what this team is becoming, it's unfortuante that this had to happen, it sucks that Lavi basically became a victim of his own success, if we do get into the playoffs this season, which we are capable of doing in my opinion, It'll ease the pain for me and my fellow Cane fans. But like I said, I dislike the move, It's been a bad time to be a Hurricane fan for awhile now and It looks like It'll continue to be so, but, they're still my team, and I love them to death, and I hope things will turn around for the good. After all, things like this do happen for a reason, but I'm still wondering what that reason is.

Go Canes Go!
