Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Questions And Answers With Case

Many folks around here tend to wonder about the different facets of people, and that includes our fellow posters. Things like the following:

"What makes you tick?"

"What ticks you off?"

"What's with this thing you do?"

"What's your favorite _____ ?"

"What do you do when you're not posting?"

And I've been asked questions on various subjects by people and I'd like to share a few of those with you right here in this space. Now, I'll only share what is fit to type here, so you folks are safe.

Q: What is it with Lubbock, Texas, that so obsesses you that you have to write about it?

A: First of all, I shared in my very first blog post that I write about what's on my mind. That said, that is what I'm going to cover. I have a deep, abiding appreciation for a number of Texas' cities and towns, and Lubbock is among that group. It is a city with tremendous potential to do so many great things, but also one that has missed out on some golden opportunities because residents are either scared or they don't a vision for their community, and I feel it deserves better than what it has or what it's received so far. So, I took the time to share what my vision is for that area. And, although I haven't written much about the city lately, it's still very much on my mind.

Q: You frequently mention food on your blog page, and you also do a thing on the Food forum every Sunday that tells everyone what your menu at home would be during the next week. You must really like food, don't you?

A: Of course. After all, who doesn't like food? Each Sunday, I do a thing where I tell the folks what my selections will be or might be for that week. Occasionally, I'll include items from a dinner outside my home that is worthy of mention. Teasing other people's taste buds is what I do best. I buy groceries, and so do you. That's another reason I post. I also share what I might be having on an upcoming vacation, and there are so many incredible places to enjoy great vittles. Now, in some parts of the week, I might tell you on a Monday or a Thursday what my dinner will be or has been, but I don't post those things every day because I do have other things going on. But what a joy it is to share food news and views with others.

And, on Case's Column, you'll see plenty of things regarding food, all the better to help you and give you some ideas and something to look forward to.

Q: You seem to put a lot into your 3-Fer series on "Anything Goes" in the Music forum. What is your secret and your motivation for this?

A: It may seem silly to some, but I needed to add a tradition to some portions of our Music forums to make things more lively. I have harbored a tradition on a couple or three threads already, but the one most mentioned is on "Anything Goes". Since that's a flexible thread, posters can post pretty much anything. So, I wanted a tradition to do each week, featuring different artists and different genres. Every Friday, I take a post and I use just three songs by one artist or group, with occasional commentary along the way. What I do is plan my artists on a calendar prior to the time of posting. Every week, the list of artists is completely different, so no repeats. As a matter of fact, I've got artists lined up clear through September as of this writing, but will also take a week off around holiday periods since participation tends to be lower. As for the songs, I only have an idea of what might be posted, but I mostly will not have a clear idea until the very day in which I post the 3-Fers. Detail is important, and I have to find just the right YouTube and recording to fit what I'm looking for. 3-Fers are an all-day affair with me on AG on Fridays, and my goal is 18 to 25 posts with plenty of variety by using the list of artists I've planned for that day. My all-time record, I believe, is 32, and that can be done because if the thread is really active, then you can produce so much. If I exhaust the list and I think the activity on the board would remain strong, then I can add an artist or two if need be. As it is right now, I'll be happy if I can get 20 in.

In addition, I chose Friday for this tradition because it is one of the days off that I take from work, and it's an easier day to implement this idea because I want to do other things on Saturday. It's also important that I don't completely saturate the thread with so many posts on one page, and that's why it's essential to have other people online posting whatever they want between my posts. This makes the thread better and my presentation more effective. It's not uncommon for me to have as many as six posts on a page or for there to be lulls that can last up to three or four hours (as is the case with any thread), and it can be agonizing to wait for other folks to make a post. Oh, I do stay occupied here at home and I have to run errands or do things outside like other people (You wouldn't want me to be by my computer all day, do you?), but I constantly check back to see if anybody new has posted. I enjoy putting those things together for others, not so much for me, even though I go back and look at what's been posted and reflect and listen to some of the songs. It's worthwhile when others enjoy the things you post. 3-Fers are like Waxing Eclectic on super-industrial-strength steroids, but they fulfill a purpose each week.

Q: You like emoticons, don't you?

A: Yes, very much so. But I must use them wisely. I've seen other people overuse them and misuse them, so I have to do what's right to fit the right mood. There will be times when I joke and cut up, and we all need a good laugh now and then, but there have to also be serious moments. One thing is for certain: I don't hesitate to use the smile icon because it will always be needed.

Q: How did you learn about City-Data and how did you find it? And why did you join it?

A: It happened one day when I was looking for information on an interstate highway's extension. One morning, I did a Google-search, and got a link to this site. After something that was written by someone else had struck a chord with me, I decided to join City-Data and put in my two cents. It looked like an intriguing site, so I dove in, and the rest is history. Look at me now, as I'm doing this on a blog page nearly four years after joining this site. If I'm positively impacting one person in a day, then my mission is fulfilled.
