Nasty Business

Since yesterday, I've been in the midst of the procedures to prepare for today's colonoscopy. If you've had one you know it is not pleasant. I'm feeling sorry for myself, but mostly I am indignant.
Why are advanced medical procedures always so discomforting to the patient? Sure, I understand that things have to be made easier for the health care providers to get a view of their patients' situations, but couldn't they design in some considerations for the patients at the same time? I'm not planning to get graphic about this, but trust me -- I am not comfortable.
Then, I got to thinking about the costs. Has anyone charted the profits of health care related careers and businesses? All during the hoopla against the health care reform act, I never once heard anyone speak out against the profits the specialists and the pharmeceutical companies make over and above others. No, everyone was so concerned that some poor soul without two nickles might get something they didn't earn, but no one complains about the number of mercedes-benz, porsche, and BMW vehicles in the hospital's reserved parking areas.
I am going to drop close to $2000 for today's little piece of nasty business, and I'm one of the several the doctor has booked six weeks in advance. This isn't new technology, but the price hasn't come down one iota since my last one, five years ago.
Meanwhile, 40% of Americans have a ZERO (or less) net worth, and 85% of the nation's wealth is in 20% of our population. I wonder how many of the 20% are doctors, or hospital administrators, or pharmaceutical company owners?
I think medical care should be a service, and doctors should be the same as commercial pilots, compensated, but not overly so. Maybe we should just pay for their schooling, and then let them suffer along with the same low pay scales the rest of us get. In fact, for the amount of money we pay for health care, we'd probably be better off sending ourselves to medical school, and being our own doctors.
Okay. Rant over. I have to go drink some more vile goop.
