"A Stranger in My Grave" by Margaret Millar

Posted 08-17-2010 at 07:05 AM by LookinForMayberry

I found this beaten paperback at an RV park book exchange, and selected it because it was one of a very few that wasn't a "breast-beating romance." The back cover attributed the Chicago Tribune's description as: "One of the best of the recent crop of spine tinglers!"

The copyright is 1960.

As it turned out, it was very good, though I wouldn't describe it as a "spine-tingler." It's a well-written story about relationships built upon deceit, and social prejudices.

It doesn't follow today's laws of being politically correct. (I learned the root of the racially biased term "greaser.") It does (to me) reveal how people's fears and romantic views of life tend to get them in a tangle.

I liked it well enough to recommend it, and to look for more by this author.
