Some parts of Kona comes up as Kailua-Kona but according to the map it’s outside of that? I’ve been to parts of Kona like Kalaoa but comes up as Kailua-Kona when searching on yelp for food places to eat. Is Kailua-Kona and Kalaoa the same thing? Kona Airport comes up as Kailua-Kona on Snapchat filters but isn’t it outside of Kailua-Kona? Really confused about what’s actually Kailua-Kona or not. Excuse my ignorance as I’m new to town.

Part of the problem could be that there are no incorporated towns on the BI. So it is impossible to say what is actually in Kona town.

Rather than trying to understand how various websites present information, you’ll just have to use your own “filter”.

Kailua-Kona is simply a census designated area with a map here:

Mahalo. That definitely helps. I saved my home address to Google map and I legitimately live in Kailua-Kona!

There are a couple places in the state called Kailua. The one on the big Island is called Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from Kailua on Oahu. As stated above, there's officially a CDP with that name. You might hear people refer to "Kailua town", which would generally refer to the 'town' portion of the CDP.

Default Where is Kailua-Kona?

The Big Island is divided into 9 districts. One is called Kona. Kalaoa is in North Kona. The others are South Kona, Kau, Puna, South Hilo, North Hilo, Hamakua, South Kohala and North Kohala. The only governing body is the County Of Hawaii, which includes the entire island and is run by the Mayor and the County Council. Towns that were in existence prior to Statehood have only loose boundaries which, basically, no one knows where they are exactly. Kailua is the village in North Kona down by Kailua Bay. It has come to be called Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from Kailua on Oahu. South of Kailua is an area called Keauhou, which is basically a shopping center, single family residences and condominiums. However, it's still in the postal zone of Kailua-Kona. Up the hill from Kailua is the artists village of Holualoa, which has it's own zip code. North of Holualoa is Kalaoa. It's not even a village, but the Feds must have a weather station there, because the temperature that shows up on my phone says "Kalaoa". The Matsuyama Store is in Kalaoa and several SFR subdivisions. South of Kailua and up the hill from Keauhou, is the village of Honalo, which is basically Kona Coffee Villas, Teshima's Restaurant, a gas station and numerous homes. Just past Honalo is where South Kona begins. The boundaries between the zones are actually well defined. Towns or villages in South Kona are, from north to south, Kainaliu, Kealakekua, Captain Cook and Kealia. Hope this helps. Mahalo, Harry M. Pritikin

That’s funny. I just put my address in Google Maps and it thinks I live in Captain Cook, which is about 40 miles away. Closest “town” is Waiohinu, and my mailing address is Na’alehu.
