Is it a good idea to buy important car parts on Ebay? (vehicle, auto)

An older style fuel pump should be OK and easily replaced, but if I went to the trouble to replace an in-tank fuel pump, I'd want someone I could call for immediate replacement (and to vent) if it didn't work. Ebay is a good place to sell things like this but, as Deez Nutz mentioned, "Caveat emptor!"
You mean it needs to go into the fuel tank. In that case I'd buy new. Because it's a PITA to do pump changes on in tank pumps as opposed to the mechanical ones that used to hang on the side of the engine. JMO. Do it once, and be done with it.
Yeah fuel tank- duh. I guess dad's grease monkey genes skipped a generation.
Thanks for the advice, I'll buy new and leave the mall trip for another week. LOL
Buy local because if you install and it’s defective than you will have to wait days for replacement, instead of exchanging it at the auto parts store and have vehicle up and running that day. Buy cheap get cheap and agervation. Can you be without your vehicle for days.
The problem I have with ebay these days is that even if you are looking for name brand/OEM stuff, you'll often GET cheap chinese knockoffs in counterfeit packaging. I used to get good deals on OEM parts there, but then the clones started showing up and you couldn't tell by looking at the auction if it was legit or not. There's still good deals to be had on used parts, but they are few and far between anymore.
Sure! An important component that pressurizes a highly inflammable fuel, and is electrically powered, and sits down inside 20 gallons of that highly inflammable fluid: buy a mystery part from Ebay, or buy a used one of totally unknown history from a junkyard!
Hey, what could POSSIBLY go wrong?
