Hey Folks, I'm knowledgeable about sports cars, scooters, SUVs, cars in general but know squat about pickups. Looking to get a semi-beater pickup for occasional use. Probably a smaller type (Ranger/S10/Toyota SR5/etc.).
Don't know if 4 bangers are a bad idea, definitely don't need anything other than 2wd/auto/AC. Use will be for local travel, light hauling only, just needs to be road worthy. Budget would be under $5K.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 93~98 Toyota T100 trucks come to mind. Last of the "Made in Japan" trucks, mine (v6, 4x4) doesn't have any issues with 24~25mpg highway. Slightly smaller than a normal full-size, it's enough of a difference to be noticeable everytime you park, but still has a 6' bed. You'd be hard pressed to find one that costs More than $5k, or at least that's true down here in Georgia.
They're from the era of reliable Toyota, no-issue Toyota, and runs-forever Toyota. I'm closing in on 200k with mine, haven't done anything more than oil and filter changes since 100k (when I bought it) back in 2002. Oh, I had to replace the battery last year.. woe is me. heh. And it's not like I do a ton of maintenance on the thing either, I don't really do ANY maintenance on it but once a year (oil). It's pretty much parked and forgotten for months on end.

I think all the info above is good. Buy something you like and feel comfortable in. If you are buying a beater, would be nice to buy something from an owner, not a dealer's lot. With older vehicles with age and miles, it would be nice to know the service history.
BTW, I have a truck that sits most of the time now. It is 2002 Ford F150 with 374,000 miles. The 1st owner was a family friend that covered 4 states for his job. He kept it serviced @ our local Ford dealer since day 1. The dealer printed a complete sevrice and repair history for me.
For little trucks I always perferred the Toyotas. They seemed to have more room that the others, but I havent owned one since 1996.
Many thanks for the input! Checking CList and Auto Trader private sales - seems to be a good number of choices in my price range.
DW's '96 Honda Del Sol just doesn't cut it for infrequent hauling gigs. As a 2nd and seldom used vehicle, a PU should fit the bill. Again, thank you all.

I think anyone that can have and afford a 2nd Vehicle should have a PU truck in their line up at home.

Check for trucks in TX, VERY cheap RUST free used trucks, makes a nice reason to fly to San Antonio and drive home. Thanksgiving to Jan 1 is the time I make trips (+ good time to get away from winter, and to enjoy the Lighted 'river-walk' and Johnson City / Fredricksburg. )
