What do you guys think of this place?
I went there last year to get an offer on a ford exporer 02 model.
They told me there wasnt a big market for them and the miles were kind of high.
Only like 80K or something. They offered me 2000 on it and I sold it for $3700 on Craigslist easily. Are they just trying to take advantage of lazy people?
I recently got a quote for a used lexus that was loaded and they offered me top dollar. Maybe it just depends on the type/demand for the car.

Well they are a business, the cheaper they can buy your car, the more they can make. I don't think they are taking advantage of lazy people, just people that don't know any better. I bet you could have sold the lexus for more on craiglist than their "top dollar" offer too.

For $2000 they probably didn't want it and would have taken it to auction. The nice thing about Carmax is they give you a take it or leave it offer that's good for like 48 hours. For some people it's a quick way to get rid of their car and get a better price than dealers are offering on trade.

I recently sold my car to them. I needed to lower my monthly payments so I went to get an appraisal thinking I'd probably be upside down and stuck with it. I was surprised by their offer. It was a '09 Accord with not a lot of miles.

I think that they low ball offers for cars that they aren't going to sell on their lot. They're pretty picky and have a lot of nice cars. I guess the older clunkers that they buy just get sent off to an auction or something. So I guess I'd say if your car is worth around $5K or less, sell it yourself. If it's worth $10-15K or more, see if they can save you some trouble by taking the car off your hands.

right, i got like 14K for the Lexus, granted i am sure more if i did it myself. I took their offer to the new car dealer with it and boy did they squirm...They had no alternative than to match the price..
They probably would have offered me 10K for it.

It's nice to not have to deal with selling a car in private transaction. You have to deal with shoppers who may not be serious or don't really have the money, and you have to take time out of your schedule to let strangers drive your car, and then there's the paperwork. There's a price worth paying for convenience.

This point can't be understated.

The craigslist sale for the $2000 car to a college kid?
Maybe a few thousand more in a few other scenarios?
No problem.

But when you get above $10,000...
and certainly above $15,000...
That buyers need for financing will be larger part of the deal for them.
