Over the past few weeks I have noticed when I turn on or off the AC I get a clicking noise that last for about a minute. The sound seems to be coming from just behind the middle of the dash. The sound will also happen if I change the temp controls, and sometimes it just starts for no apparent reason. The system continues to work as usual. A guy a gave a ride to said he thought it was a fuel pump relay. I'm not sure why. Anyone have any ideas ?
In my opinion, if the clicking happens only in conjunction with a temp control or use of the A/C it's got nothing to do with the fuel pump at all.
Depending on the vehicle, there are little flaps inside the air vent ductwork that are actuated by little vacuum diaphragms which change the air flow direction. Sometimes they "stick" while trying to open or close the flaps causing a clicking noise.
I also had something similar to this when one of my kids was little and took change from the coin holder and "deposited" them into the dash vents. The coins traveled down the duct and jammed the flaps also causing a ticking type noise. Eventually, they traveled clear down to the blower and caused a horrific clatter!
Can't beat having the right terminology, even if my thought process was correct!
BTW: I recently sold a '96 Jeep Cherokee Sport which was making that noise from the same source. With the Jeep, the sound was emanating from the passenger side footwell area.
I have a similar clicking noise in my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The sound is loud and regular like a machine gun. The click is a little like an electrical switch except it is pretty loud.
It come from under the dash and starts about a minute after I start the car. If I move the air conditioning or fan controls in any direction, it stops for a few seconds then starts again. If I ignore it, it goes away after about a minute.
This just happened to me this morning when I tried to turn on the heat, is it bad to continue driving with this noise until I get somebody to fix it?
