Everyone is saying property taxes are high here, but they dont make the top 10 of worse states. NJ is highest with over 5,000$--California is 10th with 2,700$

Texas is in the middle but thats not bad considering your housing prices are some of the best in the USA

Better look at the math and what went into preparing that number...I assume some state-wide average. The average tax rate around Austin is probably around 2.7%, give or take. No idea what the 'average' home price is, but lets assume 215,000 so I don't have to work too hard. Essentially, 200,000 is then subject to the 2.7%, resulting in annual taxes of $5400.

wow, that is high but still much lower than the other eastern states.

average home that i am looking at is 130K in RR, Georgetown, Hutto, pfluegerville- so more of a regular guy than 215K esp in a downturn

if you live outside a city and/or MUD, then your taxes should be noticeably lower than in-city somewhere. School taxes are the big hit, usually, though, and that is everywhere. There are some areas outside of G'town that are 1.5-1.8% tax rates.......

Be watchful if you are in a MUD (municipal utility district) for water and sewer as that is debt the developer took out to build the subdivision that the owners need to pay back.

It's not high when you factor in Texas having no state income tax. I had clients who sold a house in West Virginia at $250k, they bought a house in the Dallas area for $265k, and saved just over $3000 a year overall because there is no state income tax.
