Hi,

I am relocating to Austin in the summer. I have a 4 year old son with special needs. He can talk but lags behind his age-appropriate miles in speech, gross & fine motor skills and has a few other issues.

Based on my valuable feedback provided on this forum, I have been able to shortlist a few elementary schools. I started out with RRISD (as my work place is in RR, east of I35) but gradually leaned towards Leander ISD.

Leaning towards either of the first two, but open to suggestions.

1. Rutledge Elementary (Leander ISD
2. Ronald Reagan Elementary (Leander ISD)
3. Parkside Elementary (kind of ruled out as it looks like there are no apartment zoned to this school now - I am looking to rent an apartment)

Appreciate if anyone has any feedback about the other schools regarding their special needs programs, that will help me decide.

Also, if there are any good schools for this (I came across Great Oaks and Brushy Creek in RRISD), please do share your feedback.

Thanks.

I have a friend who has a 6 year old recently diagnosed with autism at Rutledge. It’s a hard transition, in general, with that diagnosis, but she hasn’t had any complaints. As a former school social worker, though, I’d reach out directly to the campuses and ask to meet with a sped coordinator or someone with knowledge of the sped department to see what’s best for you and your student. Education is not really something that center be decided by others. However, the market key did are which schools you can get into, just be aware of the craziness, even apartments, as that’s the world I’m in right now and want to rip my hair out.

You will cast a much broader net posting in the "Austin Special Needs Parents" Facebook group. Very active group
Best of luck

Thanks ashbeeigh and bpvarian for your suggestions/inputs. At this time I am looking for feedback to identify 3-4 good schools and then visit them/talk to them to make a final decision.

Yeah. This group of posters are mostly people who like to argue about real estate then offer feedback about actually topics. You may check back soonish…I know there is one poster who had a doe irl needs kiddo, but I think they’re AISD and live in far south Austin so they don’t have insight on these schools. Act quickly with apartments. My lease is up 5/31 and I just signed a lease for a new place only because I reached out to a complex on a whim and a prayer. My current lease is going up $300 and this new spot is the same price I’m paying now and the complex was like “this will be gone in a week . You need to get it now.”
