I grew up in central california outside of Sacramento - hated it the worst place in the world. At age 20 I moved to Dallas to try to start a business that was ideal for Dallas. Ironically, at same time totally unrelated my mom bought a huge house in Austin, which kind of stunned me because she has little money but I ended up moving here after 6 months in Dallas since you know, renting an apartment vs living rent free in a 5 bedroom 2500SF house. I regret that though, everything I liked about Dallas is the opposite of Austin, Dallas is big time, major business center and Austin is just nothing but hype even Dell is looking shabby, I mean come on TI has a bigger market cap than Dell now. I want to start my own business and im weary of planting roots down here so I want out, I loved Dallas but im going to switch it up and move to SV. I know the pitfalls and im ready, worst case scenario I will get the SV experience the end up moving back. Wandering if anyone has any advice or if this is crazy?

If you're looking to start a company, Austin does not provide the same incentives as other cities for small-medium sized companies:

I'm assuming your start up is IT-centric since you're considering SV. Many cities offer an abundance of IT folks these days, so there's no plus/minus for Austin other than people are paid less here.

My suggestion is move where you like.

From personal experience, SV is the epitome of the rat race.

Austin is good if you're a college kid and if you're raising a family.
