Has anyone moved locally (our new house is only 5 miles away) for under $1000? I'm thinking we could just get them to move our heavy items only. We will have a pickup available to do the rest of the moving on our own, but can't get the big items like beds, tables, etc. I have been reading through previous threads for suggestions on companies to use, but I am also wondering if most companies would let us do this? If you have any experiences to share, I'd really appreciate it!

I know that when I used Square Cow Moovers, who are local, they based their estimate on my inventory. I believe that if you just listed the items you want moved, they would just estimate based on that. In fact, I remember talking to them about doing a "partial move" with just some of our furniture, and they had no problem with that. (We later scratched that plan, for other reasons.)

I've had excellent experience with Blue Whale Movers... very flexible, willing to work with whatever your conditions are.

Thanks! Great to know. Was their quote under $1000 by any chance?

I assume you want an actual moving company, but if not, I can recommend some college students who I used for moving large items in my last move. Definitely under $1000

If you're on a budget, try movinghelp.com. You list how many people you need for how long (it advises you based on the size of your place) and whether you need help packing, loading, driving, or unloading.

Most of the groups there are 'a bunch of local guys' but we used them in NYC and had no trouble, and many of them have tons of reviews.

I'd do emove. If you just need labor and can rent your own truck it's a great option. I've done it before and it saves a bunch of money you pick some people on an hourly basis get a code. They don't get paid the code and get paid until all is done.

We used Chaparral Moving in 2007 from a 2nd story appt to a house 3 miles away. 2 guys... moved 2 beds, 3 or 4 dressers, washer/dryer, kitchen table, desk... that might be it... maybe a futon or something... all for either $150 or $200 - I forget. We did the rest ourselves over a few days. So you should be able to go well under $1k.
