We have a horrible, wood-framed, fluorescent light in out kitchen that we want to replace with recessed lighting.

Do I need to call a contractor, electrician, or handyman? More importantly, does anyone have any recommendations for someone to use?

Also, has anyone done this? How much does it normally cost? BTW, the kitchen in on the first floor of a 2-story house, which I understand makes it more difficult (i.e. expensive).

You might want to contact Duhon Electric, duhonelectric.com - One Happy Customer at a Time , I've had good experiences with him. Not sure if he could do the entire drywall/painting that might be required, but he probably knows who could do it.

A couple of years ago I did a remodeling job on one of those box florescent lights in the kitchen of a rental property. This was one of those that was wood-framed but recessed into the ceiling (had plastic panels like you might find in an office). Instead of recessed cans, I took off the frame and finished out/textured the inside to give it kind of a coffered ceiling look. Then I put up 2 tracks of some modern track lighting, came out looking very updated compared to before (and was much cheaper than real recessed lighting).

My neighbor replaced her wood framed kitchen light with a bunch of recessed lights about a year ago. Their kitchen is on the 1st floor of a 2 story house and it came out great. I don't remember the company name or how much it cost but they were a handyman company. My neighbor has since moved otherwise I'd ask her. Good Luck!
