This Wednesday, the Board of Regents will meet to talk about expanding that program by adding a new Masters Certificate in Information Security Management. The program would be the first of it's kind at the graduate level.

"This program is all about getting future leaders the background that they need to help those corporations and enterprises that they join to help them with this breach to repair cycle." said Sexton.

Faculty aren't the only ones excited.

"Getting into the military or just some type of big cyber field that's going to be growing in the next few years is a smart idea," said Mcdermott.

The program hopes to get students prepared in a cyber focused world.

If the University launches this new program, those classes will start in January, 2017. The University is also in the process of adding another Cyber Certificate course in Healthcare Information Security.

Augusta University is now 1 of only 3 institutions in the state of Georgia to offer a Masters in Cyber Security. The C.S.R.A. Cyber District is creating a need for that type of education to feed a growing workforce.

Augusta University Cyber Institute is little over a year old, but its making big strides in the academic world.

“Oh it’s a tremendous day for Augusta University and this entire community,” said A.U. Cyber Institute Director Joanne Sexton. “This is our first Cyber Masters.”

The growth from the Cyber Center of Excellence and Future Cyber Command is making Augusta a hot stop for technology. This puts the “Home of the Jaguars” in the center of all the action.

With a Cyber Security Masters Program the institution can train ‘Cyber Soldiers’ at the same level as the U.S. Army. Plus the Cyber Institute is backed by the Department of Defense and National Security Agency. A big selling point for some potential students.

“I do know that my boss, her son is actually looking into it. So he’s thinking of coming here for that reason because I think he heard about the program,” A.U. Communications Major Taylor Rutledge told WJBF NewsChannel 6.

Many students like Rutledge chose to attend Augusta University, while their families are stationed at Fort Gordon. The A.U. Senior says the cyber presence on campus is going to further connect the school to the cyber world around them.

“I think it will be nice that they are able to have a conversation with their parents. That they can connect with each other,” Rutledge said. “Like hey dad there was this cyber thing that was going on campus today and he was like oh yeah the same thing happened at my job.”

The Cyber Institute Director says she sees Ph.D Programs in the Cyber Institute’s future. However, as a public academic health center a big focus is going to be placed on healthcare security.

Over the past four years, the medical school has increased its number and percentage of black and Hispanic students by 311 percent and 109 percent respectively, or a collective 200 percent increase of “underrepresented minority” students in those four years.
“These are staggering statistics,” Buckley told a packed audience that included many students. “Having a kind of workforce that mirrors the population of Georgia will go a long way towards us helping improve the health of Georgians.
“We are on our way to looking like and serving and improving the health of Georgians. I know it because of these statistics and I know it because I am looking at you and you look like the people of Georgia.”
The school has the ninth largest medical school class nationally but has the sixth largest number of black medical students, Buckley said.
The first-year medical school class has 37 black students and the class is 16 percent black while Georgia was 31.7 percent black as of July 1, 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The freshman class has 23 Hispanic students and is 10 percent Hispanic compared to a statewide figure of 9.4 percent in 2015.
The school has made “Cultural Transformation and Diversity” a strategic goal and participates in a number of “pipeline” programs that reach out to talented minority high school and college students to encourage them to look at a career in medicine.

That's really exciting! I wonder how the possible demise of Paine College alters the medical district and AU in the future?

First I agree that Paine will unfortunately be shut down because of its inability to make its own profit, however I think it would be best if both AU and Paine flourished. If the school is disbanded and auctioned off with the Board of Regents being the successor, AU would finally have the land (acres) to develop a central campus. I would imagine the Paine Chapel would be spared and probably sold to a local church to use. I would venture to think part of campus would be developed for the Cyber Institute. The rest would be a mix of housing and probably the expansion of other colleges. At it peck the school would essentially form its own neighborhood and completely change downtown.

I think the historic building on paine's campus will survive I.e., epwoth, haygood, and Mary helm. Other than that, the campus would look completely different. I doubt AU would ever look like GSU though, but it could definitely give Georgia Southern; the other GSU, a run for its money!

AUGUSTA (WJBF) – Students, faculty and community members will have a chance to learn the latest on cyber-security from experts in the field during BSidesAugusta 2016, a cyber conference hosted by Augusta University on September 10th.
In its fourth year, the conference gathers well-known cyber-industry experts from across the country who will discuss the next big thing in cyber-attack and cyber-defense strategies.
This year, Rob Joyce, chief of the National Security Agency’s Tailored Access Operations (TAO), will be the keynote speaker.
“The ultimate goal is to keep us safe in cyberspace. And for that we need events like BSidesAugusta where we can share new information and expand the realm of our discussion,” said Joanne Sexton, director of the Augusta University Cyber Institute.
“Augusta University is proud to sponsor and support BSidesAugusta, and we couldn’t be happier to provide our community with the opportunity to learn about cybersecurity from the best in the field,” she added.
BSides is a network of cyber-security experts from all over the world who create cyber events in their communities to keep the conversation going.
BSidesAugusta is among the largest Security BSides events in the world.
BSidesAugusta 2016 will take place 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at J. Harold Harrison, MD Education Commons on the Health Sciences Campus of Augusta University.
Space is limited and you must register by Sept. 9 to attend.
