Maybe it would be helpful if the OP would name which companies are paying $40K for their tech workers. I don't know of any entry-level developers making less than $80K. I'm regularly on conference calls with designers and developers, and we joke about how much per hour some BS scrum meeting is costing the company as everyone is making a minimum of $55/hr.

The people who'd laugh at people who made $40,000 year but dressed and drove around acting like they were ballers, meanwhile living in the 'hood and piling up debt.

Wow, I stand corrected! $80K for entry level employees is serious loot.

Like I said, this has Miami written all over it.

I never wanted to be in Tech Support for as long as I was but the COVID crisis kept me in my previous Tech Support longer than what I wanted to be. I tried to get my CompTIA Security+ certification but I have failed my exam 3 times. I currently work in Incident Response for a staffing company making $20 an hour which is $3 dollar more than what I made doing tech support. I just feel that jobs in Atlanta (regardless of what level) don't pay well like they should. Companies in Atlanta want a Master's degree but only want to pay $25 an hour. Lots of my friends moved to Texas and DC to further their careers and get pay raises. I'm thinking about doing the same.
That "staffing" company is probably billing the client ~$60 per hour for your time. When I was around your age I accepted a contract job making $30 per hour and thought I finally hit the big time, lol. One day the accounting guy mentioned he was having computer trouble. I stopped by, but he was gone so I decided to take a quick look. As the screensaver refreshed I realized he had a spreadsheet up showing the hourly rate they were paying for each contractor and there I was at $80 per hour (this was mid/late 90's). Needless to say I was pissed! They were billing me out at $80 per hour and the staffing company was only paying me $30!

Anyway, moral to the story is yes, you're worth more, but you need to make that happen. You have a job now so start looking around. Don't be afraid to ask up front what the salary range is for the position. No need to waste everyone's time if it's only going to pay $20 per hour max. Tell them you're negotiable, but looking to make a step up and need at least $30 per hour to make a move. Hold your ground and chances are you'll eventually get it.

Now this is where it gets a little dicey since some do not have the stomach for job hopping, but what worked for me is repeating this process over and over until I capped out around $80 per hour. And yes, this was all done in Atlanta with only an AS. I admit I'm somewhat of a certification w***e so that certainly didn't hurt. Today I have a perm job making a little over a buck fifty with a nice benefit package so I'll probably ride this pony into retirement.

Looking back, I started out making around $14K per year back in the 80's and it took decades to get where I'm at, but I'm proof it can be done so don't lose hope! Some of the best advice one of my early managers gave me was "Don't sell yourself short".

Good advice from Need4Camaro on the certs. If I were you I'd probably put the Security+ on the backburner and grab an entry level Palo Alto cert along with entry level AWS or Azure cert. Palo Alto and the cloud are hot right now. Also, any automation like Ansible and some python would help raise some eyebrows. Ride the wave!

Best of luck to you!

No, it doesn't. Atlanta's GDP is higher per-capita, with less population.
