The widening project is one of nine projects on the first tier of a proposed Transportation Local Option Sales Tax II (TSPLOST II)

Sandy Springs would receive $96.5 million in TSPLOST II revenue, according to Fulton County projections, said Allen Johnson, the city’s TSPLOST program manager.

“The concept that’s been developed was from Roswell Road to Barfield, but this is from Boylston to Glenridge, basically the two-lane section. We’ll make it four lanes. This is also the area where we’ve done the pre-acquisition of right of way,” Johnson said..."

I hate to say it, but that's just going to bring more traffic.

Would be interesting if they could in some way implement BRT on the added lanes for uninterrupted bus transit between Mnt Vernon Hwy and Dunwoody station.

No question.

I'm far from a transit uber alles kind of guy, but induced demand is a thing - it's not made up.

However bad someone thinks traffic is on a two lane road through their neighborhood (especially somewhere like Sandy Springs where Hammond is one of a handful of east-west routes aside from 285), widen that two lane road to 4 and within a year or two traffic will be just as bad, except now you'll have a four lane road going past your house/neighborhood. If you complained about not being able to turn left before, good luck now.

Not to mention, of course, Sandy Springs is going to spend $40m of its money to do it. I daresay there are LOTS of things that $40m could go toward for Sandy Springers? Springians? that would provide lasting benefit.

Encouraging more people to use Hammond Drive as a cut through in a firmly residential area is not one of them.

I don't think widening that whole section is necessary, but Sandy Springs needs to address certain intersections for sure, such as Hammond at Glenridge.

Sandy Springs homeowners say they’re left in limbo by road widening project

Moving is not something Virginia Ready, 87, expected to have to do at this point in her life.

The Sandy Springs resident bought her home on Hammond Drive in 1963 and has seen the north Fulton city grow to more than 110,00 people.

Reedy’s home is in the path of the Hammond Drive project — one of eight properties the city still needs to acquire and could be taken through eminent domain, or the forced purchase of private property for public use..."

Such is life. She'll be compensated and the solution will be temporary once more cars flood the additional feet on flat pavement and shave five minutes off of their transit.

2 to 4 lanes is a huge advantage. Also consistent width is important. Piedmont through Lindbergh is a mess because first one lane and then the opposite lane become turn only with little notice. The only better projects are left turn lanes. Some of Atlanta's 4 lane roads are effectively 2 lanes because of short or non-existent turn lanes.

If they can widen the road there, why not put a new light rail lane instead of a vehicle lane? Connect Sandy Springs to Dunwoody Station at Perimeter Mall.
