Is there just no place in the entire metro area with halfway decent schools where I can find a three bedroom apartment for no more than $1k/month? I'm getting desperate. Have been looking for three months now, have seen just about every place in that price range, at least those that weren't covered in garbage or gangsters. I don't understand how poor people can live in the Atlanta area. I've even been willing to live in the smaller suburbs further from the city and risk the insane bigotry we'd be under just to have a roof over my kids heads and access to somewhat functioning schools.

Maybe Atlanta is not for you. Try Charlotte for that price range.

I lived in a nice subdivision of townhomes in Duluth(30096). I'm not sure about the schools but the area is relatively safe. There was one reported break in during the year I lived there. Rent was $1100 a month.

Atlanta might not be the city for you. Try Macon or Camilla, GA. Or just move out of state. Try Utah, West Virginia, Alabama or South Dakota. You MIGHT can try Gainesville or wayyyyyyyyy up 75/575

In all seriousness, have you tried Buford Highway in Chamblee or Brookhaven? There are many lower-price apartments and the people are generally poor but hard working and family oriented.

You are right. I forgot about that. Maybe she should try Promove

I've been working with Promove. There's nothing unless I want the worst of the worst.

I moved to Georgia a few years ago and have been priced out of my apartments every single year. Every single year, rent increases by $150-200. It's outrageous. What started as a very affordable city where I would settle and raise a family has turned into the worst nightmare.

Unfortunately I can't move out of state, nor even far from the Metro area because (1) one of my children's adoption isn't finalized yet and (2) they have a newborn sibling that just came into foster care and was placed with us so we have to stay until that is worked out.

1 - Which "smaller suburbs away from the city" did you look in?

And...

2 - In which part of the Atlanta metro area (neighborhood/district/town name/zip code, etc) is your job/place of employment located in?

The rental market is currently in the middle of a highly competitive stretch, particularly in large major metro areas like Atlanta.

But you should be able to find something affordable in areas with good school systems like Gwinnett County, North DeKalb County, North Fulton County or Cobb County.
