There is talk of putting a casino in Underground which I'm against. I think it would attract the wrong element in a place already going downhill. Maybe putting a casino in Buckhead might keep it somewhat upscale. Nothing about Deal makes me think he'll support a casino unless the guy is nothing but pandering to special interests. There is a movement to bring horseracing to Atlanta so if that happens, couple the two as one project I guess.

I always thought the idea of Underground was stupid. It takes people off the street and... under the ground. Not very exciting and most of the places have low visibility and it just feels "seedy". above ground with restaurants, some shopping, a bowling alley, a movie theater, bars, and nightclubs. There was going to be a condo tower built on top but it never got build due to the economy. I think something like this on a larger scale would be a good replacement for Underground. It's brought a lot of people to downtown Charlotte, especially at nights. Victory Park has more glass, high rises, and lights but is sort of the same thing - dining, shopping, nightlife, condos, offices, etc. Thoughts?

I just don't see Underground being revitalized in any sort of commercial development. The new mall didn't work, the tree lighting didn't work (now at Lenox), Peach Drop didn't work, the exclusive 4 am bar closing didn't work (everywhere else was made 2 am, or has that changed?). I think a casino will only make it worse.

Id have to agree that a casino wouldnt work at the underground. For a casino in Atlanta- like most places you need to have hotel rooms and restaurants. That way out of towners- which there will be a lot of (6 of us just drove down to Biloxi and I saw a lot of other GA license plates), will have a place to stay, and the restaurants keep the gamblers there so they dont have to leave to eat. Either way I think it will be great for the city, as it will increase tourism to the city, and most casinos have a lot of security, not only in the casino, but around it. So if they could put it in a nicer area it could really do well.

The governor always makes a difference. We didn't get the lottery until Zell Miller and Perdue has been opposed to the casino. Backers of a casino supported both Deal and Barnes so Deal might have to offer a "pay back".

No, it wouldn't fit in. A casino is sort of "adult entertainment" and the Centennial Park areas is more "family". Casinos like to be around big money so I think Buckhead would work.
But it wouldn't surprise me if Deal is in some special interest group's pocket and in the name of revitalizing Underground, a casino goes in. And yes, casinos have security but it extends out only so far. We'll see even more panhandling, petty crime, and even the occasional armed robbery. I think the Buckhead area could better cope with it although it will be even a problem there.
