The song of the white-crowned sparrow was always a sign that the end of winter was near and Spring was close. Usually started hearing them in late February around Anchorage.

Terrible pictures, but still...
My boyfriend and I were dog sitting for some friends out the road this weekend. He was going out in the morning and I in the evening. This evening, when they arrived home a bit early, we noticed that their fishing lines and other gear (they're part time commercial fishermen) were strewn about and several trash cans used for storage were toppled and crushed, with muddy bear prints on them. When I left, not but a mile or so down the road, I saw the mama bear with four cubs that cause such a stir around here last summer, sauntering down the highway. I called my boyfriend and he said that the gear was stored properly when he was there that morning, so I wonder if it wasn't these guys that ransacked the place and I didn't just miss them when I got there.
Man, I was really afraid someone was going to come flying over that little rise and smack right into them.
