I agree. I read it years ago, because I loved Tartt's The Goldfinch, but I was really disappointed by The Secret History.

I read later that Tartt went to Bennington with Brett Easton Ellis, the author of American Psycho and Less than Zero, and I wondered if there wasn't a class or two that they took together about how to write about violence and despicable characters. Or maybe they were both just young and new at writing, and thought this would sell.
