The problem with crime statistics (as with many other statistics) is context. Many people who become victims of violent crime were involved in the violent crime. If a drug deal goes bad and you get shot, you are counted in the same manner as a random victim of a sexual assault.
I'm not saying random crime doesn't happen here. It absolutely does, and when we get one, it tends to be a doozy. I can tell you that I certainly don't walk around in fear. In fact, I've been chastised by friends who are newer to the valley for leaving my car and doors unlocked. *shrugs*
