I was thinking about this the other day while driving to work. I think that some of this mentality may be that people are in a rush to get somewhere (maybe they're late for an appointment, etc) but also I think that it also depends on your -- for lack of a better term -- personality type.
I can have absolutely no place to be at a certain time and I still get frustrated while driving behind someone who I feel is going too slow. It may be that they are going the speed limit, or even 5 mph about the speed limit, but if my comfort level is 6 mph above the speed limit, then I'm going to get frustrated with them if I can't pass.
I'm that way when walking too. If I'm out walking, whether for pleasure or exercise or if I have someplace to go, I generally walk at about 4 miles per hour. My wife, on the other hand, walks a little slower. She's constantly telling me "Slow down!". Then I have to consciously walk slower and it screws me up. I don't enjoy myself as much.
I heard a joke the other day and it went something like:
"You ever notice when you're out driving that every one who goes slower than you is an idiot and everyone that goes faster than you is a lunatic?"
