The population with a graduate degree is heavily concentrated near the West Haven VA, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Yale University. Outlying parts of the New Haven area, including Milford, aren't as well educated as your family so if you are looking for more wordly, higher-income couples like yourself, you might want to limit your search.

Neighborhoods in the Greater New Haven area where more than 30% of the population has a graduate degree as as follows. There aren't as many of them as you'd find outside of a big city like NYC, LA, or Boston:

- Westernmost sections of Orange
- Woodbridge (all)
- Southern Cheshire
- Spring Glen section of Hamden*
- Easternmost section of Branford (Pine Orchard)
- Most parts of Guilford and Madison*
- East Rock, Downtown, and Wooster Square areas of New Haven**
- Westville area of New Haven**

Of the list above, Woodbridge, Spring Glen, and the higher income sections of New Haven are known as the homes of many doctors, lawyers and health care professionals. All of these areas, especially Westville, are very convenient to the VA.

Among the neighborhoods above, I've also starred the ones that are walkable, with a * meaning walkable in a few areas and a ** meaning very walkable. The others on the list, in my opinion, are somewhat unlivable, car-oriented, areas of suburban sprawl with little to no retail and you may be less likely to make community connections in them. You also asked about diverse areas. The areas on the list above that are very walkable, especially East Rock and Westville, are also the ones where there are many interracial couples and where not everyone is white. For example, Westville and East Rock are about 10% Asian/other, 10% Black, 10% Hispanic, and 70% White. The Pine Orchard area of Branford, in contrast, is 98% white.

This is how I would narrow things down, personally. In terms of making connections with families like you, walking over to neighbor's houses for brunch, etc., the quality of your neighborhood is much more important than a lot of people here seem to think. Good luck!
