From the Inside, Looking Out

Posted 07-13-2012 at 09:47 PM by LookinForMayberry

I forget that I am now a middle-aged woman, as I walk through my day. My legs are still strong as I walk, I still feel vital and sound.

Then I catch a glimpse of my reflection in a window, and I am startled to see this pudgy, slightly disheveled woman with ill-fitting clothes, saggy skin, and softened features.

As I glance around, I realize I am the only one that has noticed, and others see only the me they've ever seen. That other me was so long ago, they've forgotten her if they ever knew her. It's just as well. She was awfully filled with herself, thought she knew so much more than she really did. She needed a good "come uppance," as the old-timers used to say, when I was young -- so long ago.

I don't pause, but keep on walking. No use in letting anyone think that in addition to losing what looks I had, I've also started to lose my senses!

Probably when I get really old I will start muttering to myself, too.

I typed in "middle aged woman" and found your entry about surprising yourself when you accidently catch a glance and realize you are no longer young. I am dealing with this on a 24-hour basis. You see, I was once somewhat attractive. Now I am plain. Its difficult. It would be easier if I had some other identity: Mother, wife, best friend, etc. Unfortunately, I am not able to affix any of those labels on myself. I really am struggling!! Good luck to you. It sounds like you are dealing with aging much better than I!!

Dear Starting, I am only just now reading this. I hope you are not still struggling. Think of life like a river. If you relax, steer clear of the rocks, keeping in the deep water of the center, you will have a good ride.

And avoid labeling yourself or others. We are all so much more than our labels. Live outside the boxes, feel grateful for every breath, see that all things are beautiful when viewed with the right eyes.

    Be well.
