Okay Moms and Dads...

Posted 11-06-2019 at 08:01 PM by Angeleyes2423

Every year between the families my children get an insane and unnecessary amount of gifts. I was sorting through their room today and their closet.

I found about 10 toys... all still in boxes never opened, I have donated most of their toys.

Has anyone ever rewrapped gifts and gave them back to their kids or family?

Some people say its a bit extreme or wrong...

What's the verdict?

My kids range in age from 7 years to 6 months.

    Hi AngelEyes2423:

    Me again! (paperwing).

Do you mean the new toys you're storing (still new, unused, unopened) were given to you by others - *not* the family you want to give them to - and you’re asking if it’s appropriate to wrap these brand new toys and give them to children who would enjoy them?

They’re new! Why not? The only hitch I’d worry about if I was in your situation would be if all these people and kids know each other well.

Personally, I would be concerned about hurt feelings or appearing rude if all parties are close and/or relatives.

There are other things you can do with the toys:

Many stores have toy drops for children in need.

See if there is a children’s hospital or clinic close enough to you to donate the wrapped toys.

Take a few photos of the items, unwrapped and throw em up on Craigslist (depending on the value of the toys, it might not be a good idea. And if they aren’t expensive toys, you don’t have much to lose by donating them, other than eliminating any risk of more conflict.

Am I making any sense, or way off track? Gifts can really be a pain sometimes. It’s fun when they’re little. Given the age we live in, I have no problem with giving a Visa gift card to older kids but making sure I include a personal note.

When my girls were small, I’d take them to the dollar store so they could pick out a “present” for every family member, etc. Everything cost $1 so it wasn’t a burden.

Bonus: some of their choices were good for a few laughs and - Bonus two: they learned that giving feels really good (well, that was the idea - they sort of forgot when they hit their teens, but it’s come back now that they’re in their 20s.

A side note: I don’t have much, so I usually give my girls one new thing, and then donate to a charity in their names. It’s something you can choose to do with any/all family members. I really like the KIND/UNICEF fund (made my daughter cry -in a good way). I can’t afford to get the $177 girl’s scholarship but that would mean even more. I could split it between them, possibly. It would make them feel great.

I’ve given them “adopted” elephants and whales - they get a stuffed animal and know they’ve helped these creatures in a small way.

If the present issue is connected with the family squabble, I’d take a deep breath...

I don’t know your situation - I hope it works out.

PS mine are 6.5 years apart too. : )
