Moving somewhere

Posted 09-09-2020 at 07:50 AM by Kharisma11

I know I'm moving somewhere but I'm not certain where. I fell in love with Asheville, N.C. but I'm even more in love with San Diego. I've lived on the East Coast most of my life....but have dreamed of heading West.

Being a rolling stone isn't always easy but it certainly is always illuminating.

Oakdale, California is the perfect location for singles, as well as a great area to raise a family. Oakdale is about halfway between San Francisco and/or the Pacific ocean; and the Sierras Nevada Mtn range and/or Reno/Lake Tahoe, NV). Within two hours you can find numerous campgrounds, lakes, rivers, casinos, cabins/homes/apts, and/or yurt rentals, as well as snow related recreation. Or, you can head West, to the famous beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, the Monterey Beach Aquarium, or you can head South on Hwy#1, toward Monterey, where you can spend the day, or a weekend browsing through boutiques , shops and markets in downtown Carmel or Monterey, or simply take your morning coffee, pastry, and a newspaper down to the beach. Most California beaches, lakes and rivers have very nice (clean) campgrounds nearby. Or, for those who prefer a higher level of comfort you can rent a cabin, motel, hotel, B&B, or a pvt room with privileges.
In and around the town of Oakdale, you may decide to spend a day at the local rodeo, or have dinner at the local deli, or formal restaurant. Or you can drive thru one of several drive thru restaurants. One you've settled in, you can find a list of yearly carnivals or street fairs at the Oakdale Community Center, or Commerce building. On any weekend you will be able to find a street fair, or food themed festival at one of the many small towns in the area. Spending a day at the Frog Jumps in Angels Camp is a fun way to spend a day eating, drinking, and watching the frog jumping contest. There are a number of street fairs at two or three towns and/or bedroom communities in and around the Central Valley on any weekend. And...Holidays are BIG in or around the city of Oakdale, if you enjoy joining, or watching holiday festivities. Your only problem will be to decide whether you like Asparagus or watermelon; Corn or Cheese best...as each street fair seems to have a "food" theme...and the food is simply wonderful. My family had trouble deciding which food to spend the day eafing. Once we got smart about the area, we simply mapped out a route, and stopped in to sample the goodies, then moved on to the next town on the lroute. If you miss one, don't let yourself be depressed...because you can get to it the next year.
For those looking for intellectual stimulation, operas,, concerts, museums, art displays and more formal garden teas and/or shows can be found within an hour in Sacramento, Stockton, and even San Francisco....if you decide to make it a weekend. Sacramento, California is a great place to visit on the 2nd Saturday of each month during early summer thru Fall. Thousands of people come from great distances to take part in the 2nd Saturday Art Walk, where you can walk from one end of downtown to the other, and back to your original destination...taking in a minimum of 30 different art shows...ending the night at Ricky's Diner, a wonderful dessert restaurant. I have a real problem holding myself back from ordering two or three desserts (one for now, and two for later).
The Oakdale School District is well loved by native Oakdale residents as well as newbees to the area. Kids love the smaller classrooms, and attention teachers give the children and their families. In my opinion, the area schools take educating children to the next level. I think it has something to do with the small town atmosphere.
Housing prices are going up everywhere. However, if you are willing to settle into one of the many small cities or towns on the edge of larger communities...and are willing to commute to Stockton, Modesto, Tracy, or even Pleasanton/Dublin/Livermore or closer still to the San Francisco Bay Area, you can earn a higher wage, and still find affordable housing.
Good luck with your future wherever you land. Prayers will be coming your way to ease the stress that comes with the unknown.
Roger & Carol Baughman of Sacramento, California.
