Food Deserts

Posted 04-08-2019 at 10:48 PM by Carolina Knight

I have seen confusion on what food deserts are. I would like to be straightforward on what food deserts are and correct definitions for other deserts.

A food desert is an area where food is not available. Many could disagree using the thought a food desert is an area with limited access to affordable and nutritious food. When restaurants are present in an area serving affordable and nutritious food, the area cannot be considered a food desert.

What other deserts are there?
  • Bakery desert: An area where a bakery store or a bakery department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Deli desert: An area where a deli store or a meat department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Floral desert: An area where a floral store or a floral department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Grocery desert: An area where a grocery store or a grocery department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Meat desert: An area where a meat store or a meat department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Pharmacy desert: An area where a drugstore or a pharmacy department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Produce desert: An area where a produce store or a produce department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.
  • Seafood desert: An area where a seafood store or a seafood department in a supermarket or hypermarket is absent.

    You are wrong.

A food desert is an area where food is not available. If a restaurant with food is present in an area, the area is not a food desert.
