I just noticed this in an article in the Oak Hill Gazette about how crime has gone down in Austin. You can sign with APD to receive alerts or to keep up with ongoing police initiatives.

You can also go to Raids online to see near real time crime alerts for a your neighborhood displayed on a map or sign up to have them sent to you via email. RAIDS Online - Crime mapping, email reports and tips for the public

I was surprised to see there were 4 residential burglaries in the last 6 days in my area.

    From City-Data

The most recent year shown, 2010, the total Murders of 38 is comparable to a crime rate of 4.8 / 100,000 people. Which is pretty much the same as the crime rate for 1999 and 2000. Although it is worth noting that 2001-2009 has much lower crime rates.

The CoA stopped publishing these annual crime rates on their website, broken down by zip-coce, but when they "improved" the website last year they dropped that data. I have complained about it but they don't seem to care. The annual crime "Report" that they provide instead tends to "spin" the numbers. Annual Crime & Traffic Reports | AustinTexas.gov - The Official Website of the City of Austin and does not break it down by zip code.

This is what they said for 2011:
    • Quote:
The number of murders fell 29%, from 38 in 2010 to 27 in 2011. The murder rate is about three per 100,000 residents. (Page 3)

A murder rate of 3 for 2011 is great news considering that it has only been lower then that twice in the previous 10 years.

Most accurate would be "# charged" for murder so far this year.

    So...

25 in 9.5 months is 2.63/month, eqivalent to 31.56 for the year.
28 in 9.5 months is 2.94/month, equivalent to 35.28 for the year.

Regardless, a murder rate between 2 and 5 is small potatoes compared to some places in the US. In fact there are only 19 other cities in the US in our size group with lower annual rates.

    Quote:
    City-----------------------Murder rate
    New Orleans, Lousiana-------49.1
    St. Louis, Missouri------------40.5
    Baltimore, Maryland----------34.8
    Detroit, Michigan-------------34.5
    Newark, New Jersey----------32.1
    Oakland, California-----------22.0

2011 Austin has the third-lowest rate of violent crime among major U.S. cities

    Great news here

Austin 2011 Austin has the third-lowest rate of violent crime among major U.S. cities

    Quote:
Austin has the third-lowest rate of violent crime among major U.S. cities but has a very high rate of property crime, according to 2011 FBI crime statistics reported by Police Chief Art Acevedo on Tuesday.
According to the latest FBI data, which ranks cities from best to worst in terms of crime, Austin has a rate of 430 violent crimes per 100,000 people, behind only San Jose, Calif., and San Diego. The data came from 33 cities that have more than 500,000 people.
Even better news, the total numbers of crimes have decreased in every category except for Arson

I was happy to discover that the City of Austin has started posting their crime rates listings by zip code again. Here they are http://www.austintexas.gov/page/crim...isted-zip-code

The good ood news comparing 2010 and 2011:

Rape decreased from 261 to 225
Thefts decreased from 34534 to 33442
Burglaries decreased from 8640 to 7018
robbery decreased from 1268 to 1144
Murder decreased from 39 to 27
Agg Assault decreased from 1961 to 1922
    Motor V-Theft decreased from 2406 to 2256

The only area that increased was Arson going from 111 to 116

That is good news that crime is Austin is continuing a downward trend. In 2010 Rape, Robbery, Agg. Assault, Burglary, Theft and total crimes decreased compared to 2009.

The seven highest crime areas for total crimes are:
    ZIP....INDEXED..TOTAL

    78704...2,868...9,505 - S. Central Austin, Town Lake - BenWhite & Mopac/Loop 1 to IH-35
    78745...2.707...8,992 - Far S. Central Aus, S. of BenWhite to Davis Lane & Mopac/Loop 1 - IH-35.

78702...2,273....8,592 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.

Everyone of those crime totals decreased from 2010 except in 78701.

    78741...192 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...164 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)

Juan Romero, convenience store operator shoots and kills man fleeing with beer.
    The Blotter | www.statesman.com

The convenience store clerk was charged and tried. Quote:
A jury has sentenced Juan Romero to eight years’ probation
It appears from the article that this may be more because of his past behavior threatening others with his gun and possibly tampering with evidence and did not report the shooting, than the fact that he shot a thief. A video about that past verdict.

South Austin convenience store clerk convicted, sentenced | kvue.com Austin

    Quote:
A convenience store clerk was convicted of murder Friday. Juan Romero, 24, shot a man who stole a 12-pack of beer.
The jury of seven women and five men also found him guilty of tampering with evidence. It took a jury 13 hours to convict Romero on both counts. Then, late Friday afternoon, the jury handed down their sentence -- community supervision, which means no jail time. Romero showed little emotion as a Travis County deputy handcuffed him and took him in to custody moments after the jury convicted him.

Thursday, the jury asked to re-watch surveillance video from the South Austin convenience store where the shooting took place. In 2009 Romero was working at the Shell station at Ben White Boulevard and South 1st Street. The video shows Jorge Vielma walk in to the store and run out with a 12-pack of beer. Romero followed him with a nine millimeter handgun. The state says Romero fired 16 shots, one of which hit Vielma. He dropped the beer, and escaped with a friend in a black Mitsubishi Eclipse. Romero never called police.

Later that night, police found Vielma's body inside the abandoned car.

Romero later admitted to the shooting. He told investigators he picked up the beer and Shell casings and deleted surveillance video. Police were able to recover it from a store computer. For that jurors found Romero guilty of evidence tampering. During closing arguments Friday afternoon, prosecutor Rob Drummend told the jury that their verdict is about the importance of human life. He said their sentencing needs to communicate to the community how sacred life is. He then said justice will be served. Romero's lawyer, Patrick McNelis, asked jurors to give his client probation and community supervision since he has never been convicted of a crime. District Judge Julie Kocurek will tailor a probation for Romero. He will be back in her court Wednesday.

Latest crime statistics for Austin, 2016

I thought it might be interesting to post an update of the latest crime statistics available from the Austin Police Department (APD), which are from 2016. Crime Information | Austin Police Department | AustinTexas.gov - The Official Website of the City of Austin

The last time I did this was for 2012 to 2014 crime data, so I will be comparing the 2016 data to that previous compilation. That previous 2012 to 2014 comparison is available here. https://www.city-data.com/forum/austi...l#post43253345

    [b]Comparing 2014 and 2016:

Murder increased* from 33 to 37
Rape decreased from 586 to 381

Burglaries decreased from 5671 to 5164
Thefts decreased from 29827 to 26446
    Motor V-Theft increased* from 2443 to 2473
Arson decreased from 84 to 80
TOTAL INDEXED CRIMES DECREASED FROM 41,423 TO 37,791

*While the total number of crimes increased in some categories as listed above, they were all still LESS than the number of crimes tallied in 2012!

The eight highest crime areas for total Indexed crimes are:
    ZIP....INDEXED CRIMES
    78741...3,380 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...3,187 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
    78704...2,584 - S. Central Austin, Town Lake - BenWhite & Mopac/Loop 1 to IH-35
78758...2,563 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane

    78701...2,122 - Downtown Austin
    78723...2,061 - Airport Blvd to 183 & MLK to 290
78744...2,016 - Far SE Austin S of Hwy 71 to William Cannon & East of IH-35
78702...1,607 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.

NOTE: the TOTAL number of crimes decreased in all of the zip codes listed above.

Highest crime areas for Aggravated Assaults are:
    78741...231 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...229 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78758...188 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane
78744...151 - SE Austin Dove Springs
    78723...144 - Airport Blvd to 183 & MLK to 290
    78745...130 - Far S. Central Aus, S. of BenWhite to Davis Lane & Mopac/Loop 1 - IH-35.
78702...119 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.
    78752...117 - Lamar Blvd to Cameron Road & 183 to 290 E.
    78701...114 - Downtown Austin
    78704.....99 - S. Central Austin, Town Lake - BenWhite & Mopac/Loop 1 to IH-35

Highest crime areas for Murder are:
    78723...6 - Airport Blvd to 183 & MLK to 290
78753...5 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78758...4 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane

Highest crime areas for Rape are:
78758...34 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane
    78701...26 - Downtown Austin
78753...26 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
    78723...25 - Airport Blvd to 183 & MLK to 290

Highest crime areas for Robbery are:
    78741...147 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78758...115 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane
78753...114 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78702.....84 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.

I think this is worth repeating again here that... while the total number of crimes increased since 2014 in some categories listed above, they were all still fewer than the number of crimes tallied in 2012! This is in spite of the population increases that I expect we have seen in every zip code.

I think this is especially interesting because it is my impression that most people believe that the crime rate is increasing. I surmise that this is because news about crime is so much more readily available these days than it used to be. This results in our hearing about crime more often and leads us to conclude that more crime is taking place, while that may not actually be the case.
