I just noticed this in an article in the Oak Hill Gazette about how crime has gone down in Austin. You can sign with APD to receive alerts or to keep up with ongoing police initiatives.

1. From City-Data The most recent year shown, 2010, the total Murders of 38 is comparable to a crime rate of 4.8 / 100,000 people. Which is pretty much the same as the crime rate for 1999 and 2000. Although it is worth noting that 2001-2009 has much lower crime rates. The CoA stopped publishing these annual crime rates on their website, broken down by zip-coce, but when they "improved" the website last year they dropped that data. I have complained about it but they don't seem to care. The annual crime "Report" that they provide instead tends to "spin" the numbers. 3. Juan Romero, convenience store operator shoots and kills man fleeing with beer. The Blotter | www.statesman.com The convenience store clerk was charged and tried. Quote: A jury has sentenced Juan Romero to eight years’ probation It appears from the article that this may be more because of his past behavior threatening others with his gun and possibly tampering with evidence and did not report the shooting, than the fact that he shot a thief. Juan Romero, 24, shot a man who stole a 12-pack of beer. The jury of seven women and five men also found him guilty of tampering with evidence. It took a jury 13 hours to convict Romero on both counts. Then, late Friday afternoon, the jury handed down their sentence -- community supervision, which means no jail time. Romero showed little emotion as a Travis County deputy handcuffed him and took him in to custody moments after the jury convicted him. Thursday, the jury asked to re-watch surveillance video from the South Austin convenience store where the shooting took place. In 2009 Romero was working at the Shell station at Ben White Boulevard and South 1st Street. The video shows Jorge Vielma walk in to the store and run out with a 12-pack of beer. Romero followed him with a nine millimeter handgun. The state says Romero fired 16 shots, one of which hit Vielma. He dropped the beer, and escaped with a friend in a black Mitsubishi Eclipse. Romero never called police. Later that night, police found Vielma's body inside the abandoned car. Romero later admitted to the shooting. He told investigators he picked up the beer and Shell casings and deleted surveillance video. Police were able to recover it from a store computer. For that jurors found Romero guilty of evidence tampering. During closing arguments Friday afternoon, prosecutor Rob Drummend told the jury that their verdict is about the importance of human life. He said their sentencing needs to communicate to the community how sacred life is. He then said justice will be served. Romero's lawyer, Patrick McNelis, asked jurors to give his client probation and community supervision since he has never been convicted of a crime. District Judge Julie Kocurek will tailor a probation for Romero. He will be back in her court Wednesday. . . 4. 2012 annual crime statistics I just noticed that the City of Austin has posted the annual crime statistics for 2012 and was curious to see how they compared to 2011 below. 6. Latest crime statistics for Austin, 2016 I thought it might be interesting to post an update of the latest crime statistics available from the Austin Police Department (APD), which are from 2016. This is in spite of the population increases that I expect we have seen in every zip code. I think this is especially interesting because it is my impression that most people believe that the crime rate is increasing. I surmise that this is because news about crime is so much more readily available these days than it used to be. This results in our hearing about crime more often and leads us to conclude that more crime is taking place, while that may not actually be the case.
