Orion's second exctraction

Unsure where to begin, it's so difficult when our fur friends are hurt or ill. Last night Orion came to me and begged, he got up on his back legs, put his paw on my arm and meowed. Wow. He's 11 and has NEVER done that before. I knew something was very wrong. He then went over to Judy, his best friend who happens to be a dog and was rubbing her chest and face purring for all he was worth.
Since he had an abscess in June that was my first thought, so I checked his teeth and discovered he had a cavity starting and his gums were swollen on both sides. Where he'd had his teeth extracted and the other side as well.
This morning I called the vet I've taken the dogs to and got an appointment this afternoon. Poor guy had another extraction and was 'loaded up' with pain meds. I've never seen a drunken cat before but Orion couldn't walk straight when he came home, he was stumbling over his own feet. The vet sent him home with an anti inflammatory and silly me I thought it'd be easy to get him to take it since he was drunk. HA! I finally got it down but it was a real struggle. Fortunately he's a sweet guy and although he struggled he didn't scratch.
What disturbs me is that the vet was unsure if the older extraction still contained the root. He said he'd clean it up and x-ray it but he doesn't have a dental x-ray. It's possible it will become inflamed again. I think I'll call the other vet and ask if the root was removed, I certainly hope so, I wouldn't want Orion to suffer and doubly so since it cost almost twice as much at that vet.
He is such a placid cat, after the pain meds wore off he was back to his usual self. Here he comes now, circling the chair, looking around. After the day he's had most cats would hide but there he is sitting in his usual place under the desk. I told the vet he's the one I didn't want, he smiled and said, 'isn't that always the way?' So true. I told him Orion was so small he fit in my hand when I got him. Hard to imagine now, he's skinny at 12 pounds.
What I didn't say was that he saved my life and my sanity. A story for another day.
