We all knew that English is an international language all over the world,no matter which country you came from.Well, I came from the Philippines and I speak English since I started going to school. It's just makes me wonder why some country don't teach English as one of their subject. When I got here in America I started going to learning center because I thought I could learn more which where I met my foreign friends, one from Honduras, two from Ukraine, one from Indonesia, one from India and the pitiful one is from China. She married to American guy.I couldn't speak to her because she doesn't speak even one English word.Everybody was wondering how she communicate her husband and I found out that they have a translator device that translate English to Chinese-Chinese to English when they're talking.Well,it's hard for her to learn because she is 60 years old.One time I was watching TV show called Travel and they go to a five star hotel in ITALY which the receptionist don't speak English so she cannot understand her guest from other country. That's too bad. My teacher in learning center said my English is so good and I'm proud of it.She asked where I learned it and I said from my school, its free..I mean not because free but its really a part of our education in Philippines. I'm writing this blog not to compare myself and my country to other country but to let people know that they have to start teaching English as part of their education.
I'm thankful anyway that America teaches free English classes to immigrant and my friends is learning.

I slightly agree with some things on here. Most countries do teach English, but some people generally have no interest in learning English and they don't want to leave their country and the jobs they would like in the future may not require them to speak English. I live and I teach in Spain, since I don't live in the centre zone, it's difficult to find people who speak English, which is great for me, I get to improve my Spanish.

I agree if you work in a hotel, you should be able to speak English, especially if you know you have lots of tourist. However even if it's on the school curriculum people will still dislike and just want to speak their own language as they see no need for it.

I spent 1959-60 & 1964-66 in the Philippines and I did learn a bit of Tagalog, but since I struggled so much learning "Proper" English, it is so hard for me to learn ANY language. I wish that I knew Tagalog, because I have so much love and respect for the Filipino people, her history, and culture. While there in the 1960s I kept reading about Senator Raul Manglapus and found his books at two different bookstores in Angeles City. While working in Washington, DC in the 1970s I had the good fortune to meet him while he was living in exile and teaching at a University there. He returned to the Philippines after the demise of the Marcos government and was re-elected to the Senate, but shortly after he accepted the position of Sec. of Foreign Affairs in the Cory Aguino Administration. As Foreign Secretary he always phoned me to meet with him anytime he came to the United States. Sadly, he passed July 25, 1999 at the age of 80. I would love to communicate with Filipinos who live here in the United States or better yet if they live in the Philippines. There are some Philippine historical matters I would like to discuss with anyone who may be interested.
