Have You Ever Outgrown A Friend?

Posted 11-13-2016 at 11:52 AM by TruckWife518

Today, I finally admitted to myself that a friend and I have outgrown each other.

No, we didn't argue nor did we start to dislike each other. Quite the contrary. In fact, over the past few years, we tried really hard to stay friends and keep in touch but sadly, it got more and more obvious that we were no longer the same 2 people who we used to be. We no longer laugh at the same things or even cry at the same things.

We have both grown (which is good) but her growth and my growth just aren't compatible, I guess. That's weird and unfortunate since my other friendships and relationships continue to stand the test of time despite aging, marriages, and other life changes.

I know it sounds like the lyrics of quite a few old love songs but I can tell you this happened to us even in our platonic relationship. At some point, we just grew apart and never found our way back to the effortless friendship that we had had for so many years before.

Has that ever happened to you? We tried to keep the friendship together but it started to feel very forced on both our parts. We just could no longer relate to each other anymore despite our best efforts.

So yes, I do get it: sometimes people do just grow apart and relationships, even platonic ones, may end. Of course, we'll now graduate to only keeping in touch for special occasions such as birthdays but it won't be the same.

Maybe it really is true that some friendships are only meant to last a season. Doesn't mean you all should never have been friends; it just means that not every friend is necessarily meant to be a lifelong friend.

Sometimes, a friendship doesn't really have to end just because you change or that you start to have differences. Nothing wrong at all with saying Hi or keeping in touch.

True. She's still dear to my heart so yes, we'll probably at least say a quick hello on birthdays, Thanksgivings, and Christmases.
