Rise & Shine: Building habits

Posted 10-21-2016 at 08:57 AM by keraT

We planned a day family trip 4hrs drive away. To save money, I decided to wake up super early in the morning, drive to the airport (45 min away), pick up rental van, come back home, pick up rest of the crew & drive the 4 hours to our destination. To meet our goal, we had to be up/out by 6:30am, which doesn't seem like a big deal to most people but for me this was a HUGE challenge. Normally I wake up at 8:30am and 7:30 is a DRAG. But to my surprise I was up and out exactly as planned. I impressed myself but more importantly the next morning I was out of the house by 6am to return our rental car. And it felt wonderful to see the sun rise & the day felt soooo much longer because it started at 5:30 am for me.

After 2 days of waking up early, I was ready to take on a new challenge. Wake up early & extend my day.

The PAST - Start of this year I decided to focus on improving my sleep. I have terrible sleeping habit. I stay up till 2am sometimes even later then struggle to wake up at 8:30 am. Barely dragging myself to work by 9:30 and having to sneak in thru the back hoping no one saw me at work because it is ridiculous to be at work that late. Weekend I am sleeping till 11am.

Start of 2016 - I focused on going to sleep at a set time by developing a sleep time rituals. I tried going to bed by 10-11pm. Listen to sleep sound/music on YouTube. I even tried yoga before sleep to relax. It was all great and for a month when I focused on sleep, I was able to sleep before midnight. It was progress in my mind. But then the month ended and I focused on next goal (get moving more) and another month happened and another month,, next thing I know by mid year I forgot my goal and lost the progress I made. I tried starting over again but that only lasted for a week or so

Finally in October I decided on trying something different. Instead of focusing on going to sleep on time, lets wake up early. That way my body will naturally crave to fall asleep early once it gets tired but more importantly it is easier to force myself to wake up then to force myself to sleep.

So far.. almost a month later, I am work in progress. Loving it.

Writing this blog must have jinxed me or my vacation & super lazy weekend has ruined my routine. For a week, I have not managed to wake up early. Actually I have failed to wakeup at 8:30am. Forget my goal to wake up at 6:30 or 7:30. I am not managing what I use to.

The main change in my life, aside from few lazy days is I started working out. I need more sleep so I tried making up for it this weekend and now I can't go to sleep until 1am. Hopefully this is just a small hiccup & I will round back with in a week. Still disappointed I could not keep a new habit for more than 3 weeks
