The mills in the Carolinas came primarily from New England. It was part of the "Great Cotton Mill Campaign of the late 1880s." Prior to this campaign the South was an agricultural society. This movement was spearheaded by DA Thompkins of Charlotte and Henry Grady of Atlanta. At one time in the early 1900s, there were more cotton mills within a 100 mile radius of Charlotte than anywhere in the US. Charlotte became the distribution center for shipping the product North. It started the foundation for Charlotte being the distribution center that it is today.
