Why is racism against Latinos tolerated?

Posted 02-13-2012 at 09:38 PM by Maricely Acosta

 I am a Latina, and I must admit I've dealt w/racism from African Americans, as well as White Americans all my life, not to mention other races including foreigners, so why is it tolerated? Simply because we are, and have always been treated as less then...sad but true. Not all Latins are criminals, lazy, un-motivated. Many Latins, Latin Americans have the same goals/dreams as your average American, African American, etc. except the majority must work harder under hostile harassing circumstances in public/private schools, colleges, work place, etc. This is not a new topic, I am a 41 year old Latina and have been dealing w/this kind of ignorance all of my life. It's truly shameful that America allows this kind of abuse, and tolerates racism against Latin ppl, who are very family oriented, and bring much positive qualities into America if given an equal opportunity.
Just an observation. Pick any post here written by someone dissatisfied with life in southeastern Florida (or increasingly, Orlando.) They'll go into the usual litany about traffic, rude people, bad schools, etc. etc. And almost without fail, they'll launch into a diatribe about how their neighborhood, or their city or their county, has been overrun by "those people." They'll link "those people" to derelict neighborhoods, blaring music at 3 AM, crime, drug dealing, and just about any other social ill that you can envision. They'll label "those people" as dirty, lazy, unintelligent, impolite, unwilling to assimilate and intent on destroying the country. For good humor, they'll usually even throw in a line or two of broken Spanish.

Of course, this is just as racist as anything to ever come out of George Wallace's mouth. But let's be honest here - if somebody on this forum started running off at the mouth about n-word this and n-word that, nobody would tolerate it. That person's account would probably be suspended. But whole threads here have become so hateful and vitriolic in their bashing of Latino immigrants (and Latino citizens in many cases, I might add) that they would surely make Lou Dobbs and Tom Tancredo blush.

So why is there a double standard on race? This happens in real-world Florida as well - Blacks seem to be "off limits" but hatred against Hispanics is fair game - but the anonymity of the Internet allows the racists - via sites such as this - to avoid any restraint or attempts at civil decorum.
I am sorry you too have to go through that. I know how you feel. All my life I have been labled andit is fustrating. One should not judge someone else just because the color of their skin, religious views or political views. It is sad that in this time day and age we STILL suffer. I have very well known ancestors that are glorified in history books but they don't want to know that because they are ignorant and choose to stay ignorant. I am not from Mexico. Even if I were i would be thought of as lesser. We were in a resturant getting take out food and my husband said something in spanish and some lady said "I knew HE was a mexican!" Little does she know.. He learned spanish in college. Don't bother asking anymore . People are uneducated and choose to stay that way. I am glad MY people are in history books and have been on TV and have towns named after them, but wait,,I am some dumb mexican thouogh I have no ties to any one in Mexico

P.S. I am not racist. I love everyone, I am thankful for the Mexican and their hard work. they deserve praise. For every fruit and veggie they picked and to have it here on my plate. People get mad at one just trying to get a pay check here. Some people from other countries send american dollars to family back home, some get mad. I am thankful for every single being on this planet. God loves variety and that is why he made you. I know this is not the subject to discuss here but I had to. do not hate or discriminate

How would you like to be an old, bi-racial, Black/Hispanic woman with a disability? Life is not fair. If prejudice was not tolerated, there would be more rioting and more wars. I have worked most of my life knowing I had to work harder and better than my colleagues, the white American Christian men, just to keep jobs or advance in my career. I accept it, that's the way it is. I wouldn't want to be a prejudiced person, they must hate themselves and live in fear.

There's a building in Nutley NJ which is very hostile to Latinos per say and full of white bigoted racists.. it is Twin River Gardens in Nutley, NJ.
If you are a Latina or Latino and thinking of moving into this building complex, think again, this building is crawling with white racists.
Nutley in general has tendencies to be blatantly very racist as well. Mistreatment of Latinos is common there.
