A Thought on America

There are many ways in which America just pisses me off on a daily basis. We have entire generations which are actually dedicated to egoism and greed, who exhibit an utter lack of broader human understanding; but there is one area in which we excel, in which we have a freakish capacity, almost a mutation, which sets us apart from all others.
What sets Americans apart from all others is the level to which we aspire in the face of adversity. It goes without saying, we can be our own worst enemies; but it is undeniable that for all our political top-heaviness which has lent itself to some of the very worst the world has to offer, it is our citizens who are ultimately friend to the world, reaching out a hand when no other makes the slightest offer. This isn't born simply of kindness, but from a way of seeing potential where others do not and a curious brotherhood which flourishes therein. Perhaps it comes from our mongrel heritage.
It is the way we rise in the face of an enemy, a spirit not necessarily of excellence but most assuredly of defiance. Where others surely do rise with a similar defiance, it is only in Americans we see that defiance rage in the form of idealistic concepts such as injustice, spiritual indignation.
During such times we will unswervingly seek either resolution via science or resolution via unwavering conflict. We may be destroyed but we may not be defeated. In peacetime we lament the construction of our own homes. During war, once our spirit is stirred, we build walls which are unbreachable. Though the term came from an expression of condescension there is ultimately much to be said for the spirit of Yankee Ingenuity.
It is a lesson learned by those who have sought to defeat us in the past, perhaps best expressed by the famed "quote" (never having been genuinely verified but certainly the viewpoint held) by Isodoru Yamamoto regarding having wakened a sleeping giant.
Oddly... it seems our very leaders are the ones who have forgotten our origins as a country and our very nature. We are in a way fragmented, even small; but we are most of all an unpredictable people who have the capacity to be filled with a terrible resolve -- and that makes us mighty.

I don't think we're completely destroyed, but I also don't think we have leaders right now. We sure could use some rather than people who are running from something.
