Moving to Jefferson Park/ Portage Park

Posted 06-02-2013 at 09:57 AM by ILNative

My girlfriend and I are moving to Jefferson Park/ Portage Park area this August. We want a more family-oriented atmosphere. I have heard mixed reviews about Portage Park, however, I hear anything North of Irving Park Rd and east of Central is a better fit. We also like how snuggled Jefferson Park is off the expressway, yet easy access to Blue Line and Metra. Does anyone have thoughts or opinions on these two, Portage Park in particular? Thanks!

We live in the SW corner of Jefferson Park close to the NW corner of Portage Park and love it. Previously, we rented in East Lakeview, then purchased a condo in Albany Park. Jefferson Park is a quick drive to the expressway and it's close to the Jeff Park train station. You can park for $1.50 a day because the lot is owned by Metra and not the CTA. I don't really spend much time east of Central, because the direction tend to walk is the area North of Irving Park and West of Austin. We like the strip of Irving Park where you find Regulus Coffee House, The Patio Theatre, and Thrift and Thrive. Now that we have a baby, we find that in addition to walking around our neighborhood, it's also convenient to drive to other neighborhoods, park, and spend the day walking those neighborhoods, having lunch, etc. I don't have a lot of information about Portage Park, so hopefully someone can chime in
