I don't need a ton of acreage, just a few is fine. And the house, I'm not concerned with luxury. A nice mobile home is fine. Having a chronic pain illness has taught me what really matters in life, so I'm giving up luxury for serenity. I don't care for a fancy house, just something nice and comfortable inside.

    Best small...towns...NW Phoenix

NW of Phoenix 45-60 minutes - the outskirts of Wickenburg, desert town historically famous for "dude ranch" resorts, may have something of what you're looking for. Another area is due north of Phoenix on I-17 - Mayer, Cordes Jct area. Slightly cooler than Phx being a little higher--but still only hour from major shopping, medical etc of Phoenix. Half hour into cooler yet Prescott. Another 45 min further north is Verde Valley/Cottonwood, both of which - esp Cottonwood - have basic daily needs/services. Both also of an elevation not too hot or cold. SW of Phoenix not much but sagebrush and rattlesnakes. There is Buckeye--on the fringe of Phoenix metro area, mostly an old farming community, and forty minutes further down the road Gila Bend "fanbelt capital of the world" and favorite of Phoenicians as first pit stop on way to San Diego fun, but that's bout it.

    ...Phoenix Cont'd

Followup to my comment above. On further thought, Cordes Jct/Mayer area would be a good compromise. There are some new-ish small residential developments, some of which might have a few acres for horses, etc. Cordes Acres or some such. The beauty of that area is that your daily needs are just down the road in Prescott Valley and Prescott (incl a Costco) a 30-45 minutes, without those areas somewhat (PV) to significantly (P) higher prices. Prescott Valley might have some mobile homes that fill the bill though. Cordes and Mayer also give you a leg up on Phoenix in getting to "high country" pines of Flagstaff etc to cool off occasionally in the summer. Sometimes it seems that half the work of getting to Flagstaff from Phoenix for a summer cool off is just breaking free of Phoenix' gravitational pull--lots of I-17 traffic and a pretty major/abrupt grade change north of town (but south of Cordes)...making it feel like a bigger deal than the 2:30 to 2:45 the Flagstaff drive should be. OTOH, the 17 traffic's a bear half way to and from Cordes especially at rush hour(s) so I wouldn't drive into Phoenix but once or twice max a week unless I had to, and then off peak.

You might try looking in the Chino Valley area just north of Prescott. There are some nice horse properties around sections of open land for riding. Des Vinson Bodine with West USA is a great Realtor up in that area that could help you look at options in the area.
