EasyPay Metrocard - Don't use / No Fraud Protection

We'll see how my recent experience pans out but I recently lost EasyPay Metrocard (never have lost metrocards) when I switched temporarily to a monthly unlimited. I kept the EasyPay Metrocard in my wallet for other occasions and it must have slipped out at some point and I didn't notice it. Somebody else noticed it and was taking 7 rides a day. I was fortunate to be paying bills and noticed my card getting hit twice in 2 days and took action but it appears that there is no system to limit your exposure so had I not noticed it for 30 days it could have cost me almost $1,000!!! We'll see if the MTA is reasonable (I'll report back) but I'm guessing they'll stick me with all the charges until I reported it lost / stolen. Not all the rides have posted so my exposure could be $90 (3 days of lost charges). I got very lucky and will be canceling my card unless I get an intelligent resolution from the MTA consistent with how credit card companies limit your exposure to fraud. Otherwise the benefit doesn't outweigh the risks for this card.

An update - I didn't cancel the card but was supposed to get a new one on the premise that this would better position me to continue to dispute the charge. Well...I got busy and never noticed that I didn't receive a new card and somehow $150 of charges have racked up again. My prior dispute was denied without any contact with me (I found out when I called again to dispute the charges and cancel the card). I will try to contact a Board Member on the MTA about this card but would highly recommend against getting an EasyPay metrocard especially for convenience sake (1) no fraud protection (2) difficult to monitor your own usage unlike other metro cards (3) limited time savings and on and on and on[/quote]

What was the outcome of this? Same thing just happened to me but I didn't notice for 6 weeks worth $900.

The MTA was useless even as I tried to elevate it to manager levels (promised to return calls and didn't) and ended up using AMEX to dispute it and ensure we disassociated the card with EasyPay/MTA. Got some charges back but couldn't take more time on this. Haven't contacted the MTA board member and it burns me up to see adds for this horrible product.
