The College Search Is On

The movie College Road Trip came out just as my daughter was making her first college visits during April vacation last spring. She and her Dad did the "southern loop", stopping at Towson University in Baltimore, MD, Christopher Newport in Newport News, VA, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston and up to Elon in North Carolina. It was quite a week. This was the first time that our daughter did any significant driving on a highway and they had their "moments".
I'm signing on for the "northern loop", which is primarily confined to Massachusetts, it seems. We start out at Nichols College, where her sister attends. Nichols is a beautiful small school set on top of a hill and looks like it should be in Vermont! We'll also spend some time at Endicott College in Beverly, MA, UMASS Dartmouth, Salve Regina and Roger Williams in Rhode Island, then up to University of Hartford in Connecticut.
I'm looking forward to this time in our lives and I encourage any parent who has the opportunity to do the college visit to have fun with this process. Enjoy it for what it is - a glimpse into what may be the next step for your son or daughter. Be patient in the car as your student is busy texting, listening to an IPod and once in a while acknowledging that you're driving too slow.
Don't be surprised when your student says that the school they liked the best was the one you thought they wouldn't care for, or when they decide that living closer to home really isn't all that bad -- just don't give them the idea that you didn't want them to leave in the first place!

Oldest from Salve, Newport, RI BSRN. Now a NP employed by a local practice. Calm, beautiful campus located on ocean in mansions.
Middle daughter graduated from U Rhode Island BSRN. Now ICU nurse at Walter Reed DC. Quiet, clean New England campus located in the country. Small enrollment of about 5000, ivy covered buildings, safe and quiet.
Youngest, 20, finished junior year at URI with 3.8 overall (all 3 graduated with over 3.8) must be my genes I wish. She will also be BSRN. Jobs anywhere, excellent income, bennies, job offers start arriving already. Usually 1rst year RN around $50k. Specialize in Neonatel ICU, ICU, CCU salaries jump significantly. NP,s start about 65-75k making over 100k by 5 yrs depending on location and need to spend. Roger Williams is an excellent private school new campus.
