The Material Editor 1

This is a program from hell. I read & re-read the 250 pages of 'theory' of how this part of a program inside of 3dsmax works. I was lost for many months. Now in a matter of minutes I can explain this to you without any of the theory behind it. Results are all that count. Theory you can learn later.
How to access the material editor. Click on the icon as shown. Newer versions of max might have a different icon and it might be in a different place on the tool bar menu.
On the main menu up top under TOOLS you can access the material editor in that fashion also.

This is going to take some time to explain the many different steps required to 'map' a texture to any object. You can see 24 greay spheres or balls. These are the different texture slots. The top left slot is selected by the heavy white line around the entire square of that slot. click on any slot to select it. for now we will use the 01 default slot = top left.

Now that you are aware of what the Material Editor looks like, Here is how to make it work to add a texture to the playing surface.
NOTICE: you must have the object selected that you are going to 'map' the material onto.

After you have completed those 5 clicks, This is what you will see. The texture is mapped to the playing surface, but it is not in the proper 'tiling' to achieve the effect we want. TILING: needs to be set to 4 in each of those two slots as you can see in the image below.

The map of the checkerd pattern we used to place on the surface of the playing board is wrong. We have to set the TILE; = 4 as shown in this next image.

Now the map is correctly positioned for the chess playing surface.
NEXT: apply two different wooden textures. One for the board and a different one for the table surface.
BEGIN: by selecting the green board & clicking on it.
Next: select slot #2 in the material editor
the ball to the right of the checkered ball in the material editor.Posted 12-19-2011 at 09:55 AM by SityData
