Stinky Mattress

Posted 11-15-2008 at 09:57 AM by Drouzin

So we finally get to sleep in our own home on our new mattress last night! I purchased a bottle of wine and some flowers and a few of those mini muffalattas to celebrate. Everything was perfection. I had made the bed with my purchased-a-year-and-a-half-ago bedding from Wal-Mart, and had actually hung a decorative mirror on the wall so that it looked like someone lived there. The problem? The bed smelled like moldy Katrina.

When it came the delivery guys practically ran into the house with the mattress and box spring and ran right back out. Which kind of weirded us out. This is the New Orleans area and no one, (seriously, no one), just makes a delivery and leaves. There is always some conversation even if it is just about the weather or how the neighborhood is coming back. And of course you have to at least offer them something to drink, (Mamma always offers food). Heck, the guy who delivered the doors stayed 20min and we found out that his aunt was my SIL's friend growing up, (that is how it rolls down here.)

Anyways, the guys leave and a few min. later we smell this moldy Katrina smell, (minus the sour undertones), and realize it's comming from the new mattress set. Because everything that could go wrong with rebuilding has gone wrong, we are now just living in denial. We now say to ourselves, "Nah, not happening; it'll be fine." So on this day we choose the, "it'll be fine," option.

Well three days later, on our big night, the smell has not gone away. He goes to bed before I do, so I'm watching Craig Fergerson when he comes out of the bedroom hacking and coughing. "I can't take it anymore; I can't sleep on that bed with the smell." He removes the cushions off the lawn furniture, (we have no sofa set yet), lines them up on the floor and proceeds to snore away leaving me no other choice but to sleep on the bare floor or the stinky bed, (sorry ladies he's taken).

I wake up late this morning feeling stuffy with the smell of mold trapped in my sinus cavity and greet Hubby whose cushions separated during the night so that parts of his body had lain on the floor and left him with aches and pains. At least we had the wine and muffalattas.

"You know I wondered why those guys worked so fast when they delivered the bed," Hubby said. "Now I know why." So I play along, "why?" Apparently he Googled and some idiot passed some idiot law in 07', where they have use some kind of fire retardant on new mattresses that smells moldy. Hubby says that there are a lot of people complaining about it on the internet.

For heaven's sake if the damn mattress is on fire don't these morons who make these kinds of laws know that I'll figure it out on my own?! Meanwhile I'll die of nose cancer from the fumes while Hubby is confined to a wheelchair from sleeping on the floor.

    Hi Chelsi,

I am using Cal king (Queen Mattress) and like it too much. In 2008, I had severe back pain problem, and needed something that would help. My friend suggested me Tempur-Pedic, but to be frank the situation gone worst. So after hearing from many people's recommendations I choose upon Cal king. I really like it!

Hi Chelsi, There is no any such exchange offer in the city in my knowledge. Better you search in Google Local or go to memory foam mattress to find new offers for mattress.

I recently bought my mattress, and luckily i was warned before hand to do my research into that stuff. You need to look for a mattress with no offgassing or no VOC. That smell is actually pretty bad for your health. I went with a keetsa mattress. They sell eco-friendly mattresses in toronto - www.keetsa.ca. Its great since normally organic mattresses are super expensive, but since these arent 100% organic, they have pretty low prices. i got my queen sized mattress for $699. The only smell that i smelled (that totally went away after about a week) was cedar oil, which they put in thier mattresses to repel dust mites and bed bugs. Keetsa is in Toronto in the Beach, you should check them out.. really comfortable mattresses too.

If you're looking for a natural mattress in Toronto you'll want to check our www.myessentia.com. Organic mattresses that are incredibly comfortable.
You wont have to smell those chemicals found in normal memory foam mattresses.

Essentia is in the beach on Queen St E.
